Solar Energy May Soon Be Competitive With Fossil Fuels

solar cells

Last week the Department of Energy issued a conditional commitment for a loan guarantee of $150 Million to 1366 Technologies, Inc. for the development of a new method for manufacturing multicrystalline wafers. The new process, called Direct Wafering, dramatically reduces the time, waste, and cost of producing wafers. The result is a wafer that uses 90% less energy to produce, costs 50% less, and can be used by any crystalline cell manufacturer. The project will reduce the cost of solar energy, while creating new jobs.

The benefits of this technology may be multifold. Thus far high cost has been an obstacle inhibiting the transition to solar energy. New technologies like this, however, may soon make solar energy competitive with fossil fuels. Also, the U.S. currently manufactures less than 5% of photovoltaic cells. An innovation such as this may give the U.S. the edge it needs to take back the market, and create many more jobs.

Eco-friendly painting done right.

US Green Chamber member PaintGreen explains that they felt a responsibility to reduce the impact they have on the environment while still providing the best quality, eco-friendly products and painting services available.

"Green attitude runs deep in the organization," explained Jon Ray, owner and founder of PaintGreen Professional Painters. "We use sustainable office products, drive old trucks that get good gas mileage, and use the expensive roller covers that are reusable and renewable."

Featured Staff Member: Mark O'Brien

Meet Mark O'Brien, the USGCC's Brand Champion. mark obrienMark recently moved from Cambridge, MA to San Diego to begin working at the U.S. Green Chamber.  He holds a bachelor's degree in Marketing from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and has also completed extensive study in the sciences.  Mark's combination of business acumen and scientific mindset is helping bridge the gap between scientists, environmentalists, and the public in regards to issues of sustainability and how to most effectively preserve our earth. He is particularly interested in energy policy and sustainable business models, and has quickly become a highly valued member of the team.

Mark has varied hobbies and interests ranging from snowboarding, music and astronomy, to an uncharacteristically odd fascination with blue lights.  He is psyched to be in San Diego and is looking forward to his first surf lesson!
