Germany Decides to Phase-out Nuclear Germany announced yesterday that it plans to shut down all of its nuclear power plants, 17 in total, by 2022. It hopes to be an example to other countries for accomplishing sustainability while providing jobs and economic stability.
Chancellor Angela Merkel said the plan also includes the reduction of CO2 emissions by 40% and doubling of renewable energy use from 17% to 35%.
Immediately following the disaster at Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant, Germany shut down its 7 oldest reactors, which produced 40% of the country's nuclear power supply. Those reactors will remain offline permanently. This is a dramatic turnaround from a government that had recently made an unpopular decision to extend the life of these reactors. |
