Celebrating $1 Million in Grants
This past week, at our Bridging Generosity, Leadership and Grantmaking luncheon celebrating our Community Grants program, the tireless commitment of philanthropists and nonprofit organizations in our community was evident in the performances and stories shared. In the words of speaker, Saif Ishoof, executive director of City Year Miami, the work we do is "all day, every day". All day, every day, philanthropists, nonprofit and community leaders work collectively to engage and address the most pressing needs of our community. Through this grant program we invested over $1 million this year in this work. We are able to award these grants each year thanks to the trust placed in us by philanthropists. Grants are awarded in the name of the philanthropist, perpetuating their legacy and commitment to building a Greater Miami.

KAPOW
During the 2011 - 2012 school year, more than 5,000 students at 50 elementary schools and K-8 centers throughout Miami-Dade took part in the Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW) program we support.
"The generous grant from The Miami Foundation allowed us to leverage new dollars that would not be otherwise possible," noted John Casbarro, of KAPOW.
Together with teachers at each school, more than 400 volunteers from ninety businesses and community organizations teach KAPOW's lessons on career development and workplace skills. Throughout the school year the students take field trips to the volunteer's work sites where they engage in hands-on and interactive activities.
You can read more about the KAPOW program and how your school or business can participate here.

Nonprofit Executive Grants
Marisel Losa understands that to effectively lead her organization during a period of rapid change and innovation, she must be prepared. As President and CEO of Health Council of South Florida, an organization dedicated to addressing health and quality of life issues, she was looking for an opportunity to strengthen her leadership skills and gain tools on strategic planning and partnerships. The week long program she attended at the Harvard Kennedy School was Women and Power; it was exactly what she was looking for.
The program, led by some of the top professors and facilitators in the world, provided Marisel and 43 women from around the world a unique and dynamic experience focused on leading through tough situations. "It was absolutely phenomenal. I'm eager to bring what I learned at Harvard to my work for the Greater Miami community," said Marisel.
Through our Nonprofit Executive Grants, Marisel and five other nonprofit leaders were able to attend leadership skills and management training programs throughout the country. Applications for our 2012 Nonprofit Executive Grants program will be released later this year.

Remembering Robin Gibb
(1949 - 2012) Robin Gibb, singer, songwriter and co-founder of the iconic group the Bee Gees, passed away on May 20. With hits spanning over five decades, the Bee Gees are among the biggest-selling groups of all time. The Gibb Family Foundation at The Miami Foundation was established in 1988, shortly after the death of their younger brother, Andy. The Gibb Foundation has awarded over $243,000 in grants to organizations like the Diabetes Research Institute, American Cancer Society and American Heart Association. Music has been shaped by the talent and passion of the Gibb brothers and we are proud to partner with the Gibb family in helping them steward their brothers' legacies.
