Engaged Youth ready to lead
Viviane Valdez is an energetic high school senior at South Dade Senior High. She cares deeply about Miami and making it a better place. "It's our responsibility to learn more about our community and find ways to give back," she says. "Soon it will be our turn to lead."
Eight months ago we brought together high school students from across Miami-Dade County for a leadership program, Engaged Youth. We connected high schoolers to each other, to our community and provided them necessary tools early on, to prepare them for their turn to lead. We quickly realized that, like Viviane, the high school students selected were dedicated, energized and talented.
Last month, the Engaged Youth graduation marked the end of the program for the inaugural class and the beginning of their greater understanding and appreciation of our diverse community and the responsibilities ahead. For more information about the Engaged Youth program, click here.

Honoring a friend through philanthropy
Will Johnson was a Coconut Grove native and passionate community activist. He worked tirelessly to improve conditions for the residents of Coconut Grove Village West. When Will passed away, his friend and former Board Member of The Miami Foundation, Jimmy Morales, created the Will Johnson Memorial Fund to honor Will's legacy. With the guidance of our philanthropic experts, Jimmy learned of a number of organizations doing great work to make life better for residents of the West Grove. He selected Coconut Grove Cares and made a grant of $15,000 through his Will Johnson Memorial Fund to support the safe space Coconut Grove Cares provides for neighborhood children. This grant will enhance their computer lab which now will be dedicated in Will Johnson's name and serves to further the legacy of his commitment to this community. The identification of impactful programs is one way that the expert staff at The Miami Foundation assists philanthropists like Jimmy Morales.
