Why Are Long Term Care Coverage Providers Making Major Changes?

You may have read that the long term care coverage industry is in flux lately. Some large companies such as MetLife and Prudential have stopped issuing new policies. Others like Mass Mutual and even NPFBA have adjusted their plans. The flux may lead you to question the stability of your current policy or delay purchasing a policy. However, long term care coverage remains a good way to protect your assets as you age.

The long term care industry has been changing as it matures. Most companies only began offering long term care coverage in the late eighties and nineties. At that time, the industry based rates and benefits on the available national statistics for life expectancy, potential care needs, and future interest rates. However, the United States has experienced dramatic changes in all of these numbers. Americans are living longer than 25 years ago, which means we spend more time in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and using home health care services. This means that long term care coverage providers need more assets than anticipated to cover benefit costs. At the same time, interest rates have gone down and are projected to remain low for a few more years. Lower interest rates decrease the amount of potential assets available to pay for long term care benefits. The combination of factors has led to adjustments and consolidation within the long term care coverage industry. Click Here to Read More

Drinking Red Wine Is Good for Gut Bacteria

Moderate Intake of Some Red Wines May Improve Health, Study Shows

Wine glass May 25, 2012 -- Drinking a daily glass of red wine not only tastes good to many people, but it's also good for the bacteria lining your large intestine.

A new Spanish study suggests that sipping about 9 ounces of Merlot or a low-alcohol red wine changed the mix of good and bad bacteria typically found in the colon in ways that can benefit your health.

Bacteria may sound like a bad thing to have in your intestinal tract, but having a balanced mix of them actually helps to digest food, regulate immune function, and produce vitamin K (which plays a key role in helping the blood clot).
