Greetings!

The trees are in bloom, the days are getting longer, and spring has come to Valley Oak. This month's newsletter brings details of the 2012 Child Care and Education Professionals Conference, an update on the advocacy work being done by our local Parent Voices group, and information on the changing needs for child care in the current economy. We also note the birthday of one of our favorite authors of children's books. And with the longer spring days our listing of community events grows longer as well.

We will be hosting a public information night at Valley Oak Wednesday, March 7th from 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. Representatives from several local agencies will have information on topics including child abuse prevention, mandated reporting, poison safety, lowering utility bills and preventing telephone scams. Valley Oak staff will also be on hand with child care information and resources. We hope you can stop by!

"Day care is slowly becoming night care in today's economy, as parents work ever longer days, take on second jobs, and accept odd shifts to make ends meet," reports Sabrina Tavernise in a recent New York Times article (January 15, 2012).

"About 40 percent of the American labor force now works some form of nonstandard hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and early mornings, according to Harriet B. Presser, a professor of sociology at the University of Maryland.  That share is expected to grow with the projected expansion of jobs in industries like nursing, retail, and food service, which tend to require after-hours work.

"At the same time, working hours are less predictable than they once were. 'There's a greater variability and irregularity of schedules,' said Lonnie Golden, a professor of economics and labor studies at Pennsylvania State University. 'In surveys, more and more people are no longer able to specify a beginning or end of the workday.'

Dr. Seuss!

Reading to children is one of the great joys of parenthood. It's especially

rewarding when books are entertaining for adults, too.

The books of Dr. Seuss have been entertaining children and adults for decades, so with March 2nd being the birthday of Dr. Seuss, we thought it would be a great time to visit the Cat in the Hat and the many other characters again. It's also a great time to visit Seussville!

Reading CatSeussville offers not only games and activities for children, but resources for parents and teachers as well.

Developing a love for reading begins at home, and these Tips for Reading with Your Children will help make it fun for both parents and children. So pull up a chair and take a trip to the Jungle of Nool and see if you can hear a Who!

The California Inclusion and Behavioral Consultation Network (CIBC) is a professional development project designed to respond to requests for technical assistance from administrators and teachers in early care and education programs.

A network of experienced, local consultants provides on-site consultation to build the capacity of the programs and providers to respond effectively to children with special needs or challenging behaviors. Consultants have knowledge of relationship-based practices and community resources and are skilled in problem-solving issues around inclusion and challenging behaviors. Consultants meet with staff, observe the environment, facilitate the development of action plans and support site implementation of those plans.

The priority recipients of technical assistance are CDE-CDD contracted early care and education programs throughout California. There is no cost to the site for this consultation.

Site administrators, preschool teachers and child care providers may submit their requests for technical assistance online, and CIBC staff will contact them to discuss their needs.
