Some words of welcome

Along with all of you, The Consortium for Public Education celebrates the beginning of another school year. We welcome all of you back! As always, we've been busy mapping new plans to support you, your students, your schools and your districts. To read about our 2011-2012 agenda, click Consortium.

Tom Knight

Losing a friend

The Consortium for Public Education mourns the loss of friend and former Board Chairman, Dr. Thomas
A. Knight. Dr. Knight died last month after a yearlong battle with cancer. The Consortium's Executive Director, Linda L. Croushore, Ed.D. reflected on her long association with him. To share her thoughts, click Remembrance.

Deadlines approaching

Registration deadlines for our Leadership Institute, a new yearlong Act 45-eligible professional development opportunity, and Journey to Learn, our annual Act 48-eligible multi-district, in-service opportunity are both close at hand. Applications for our Great Idea Grants also are soon coming due. To learn more about all of them, click Deadlines.

Pathways field trip

Health pros give Pathways participants inside view of their field

Students participating in The Consortium for Public Education's Pathways to Health Careers pilot program wound up their experience with a field trip to UPMC Shadyside Hospital's Herberman Conference Center, where dozens of health professionals were on hand with information and advice. To read more about the trip and the program, click Pathways.

Consortium welcomes

Educator-in-Residence

The Consortium for Public Education is pleased to welcome Mary Dodaro, a Language Arts teacher on sabbatical leave from Monessen Middle School, as an Educator-in-Residence. She joined us in July and will devote an entire year to working on a range of Consortium projects. To read more about her, click Educator.

Get ready, get set, get off to a great start...

Sometimes, little things make a big difference and, with students, lots of them take no more than 20 seconds. Author Annette L. Breaux offers some of these simple tips for getting a school year off to a great start in her book, 101 Answers for New Teachers and their Mentors.   As part of The Consortium for Public Education's emphasis on personalizing the learning environment, Educator-In-Residence, Mary Dodaro, and Program Coordinator Jennifer Sethman have culled her ideas and added a few of their own. To read more, click 20-second difference.
