Greetings!

Early autumn is a time for transition from summer break to back-to-school time, from long days to ever-earlier sunsets. Brethren Insurance Services is making a transition, too --- starting with the 2013 plan year, Brethren Medical Plan will shift from a self-insured plan to a fully insured plan. Read more about this transition.

As a Brethren Medical Plan member, you should be aware that open enrollment for Medical and several ancillary insurance products will be in November. Your human resources representative will provide you with information about enrolling in 2013 plans before Nov. 1. If you have questions, contact Member Services Representative Connie Sandman at 800-746-1505, ext. 366 or csandman@cobbt.org.

Enrollment in Brethren Insurance Services' Medicare Supplement plan is always available to current or former Church of the Brethren employees within six months after their 65th birthdays. How much do you know about Medigap coverage? Read the basics here, then make sure you don't forget to enroll.

September marks Cholesterol Awareness Month --- a time to test your cholesterol levels and make lifestyle changes if they aren't in line with your health goals. This month's health guide (in the column to the left of this message) features an overview of cholesterol-related questions from the National Cholesterol Education Program.

Your cholesterol isn't the only number you need to keep in line with doctor-recommended standards --- your blood sugar, body-mass index, and blood pressure are equally important in taking a look at your overall health. Learn what these numbers mean and what some target measurements are in this article.

Brethren Insurance Services looks forward to another healthful plan year with you!

Brethren Medical Plan expects to offer a variety of designs for group medical plans through several national and regional insurers. The Medicare Supplement insurance program will also transition to one fully insured plan design. Medicare Supplement insurance is available to all Medicare-eligible employees and retirees of Church of the Brethren-affiliated employers, as well as their Medicare-eligible spouses, widows, or widowers. Plan designs and rates for 2013 will be announced in November during open enrollment.

Open enrollment for Dental, Vision, Supplemental Life (for current Life insurance members who are eligible to add up to $10,000 of additional coverage), and Short-Term Disability insurance will also take place in November. These products are available to eligible employees (and family members as applicable) of congregations, districts, camps, and other Brethren-affiliated organizations.

Medicare Supplement insurance

The basic facts about Medigap policiesMedigap

What is Medicare supplement insurance?
Medicare supplement insurance, sold by Brethren Insurance Services and other insurance providers, can help pay some of the health care costs that Medicare parts A and B (also known as Original Medicare) doesn't cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Medicare supplement insurance is also known as Medigap because it is intended to fill the "gap" between total medical costs and the actual amount reimbursed by Medicare.

Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs. Then your Medigap policy pays its share.

A Medigap policy is different from a Medicare Advantage Plan. Those plans are ways to get Medicare benefits, while a Medigap  policy only supplements your Original Medicare benefits.

8 things to know about Medigap policies

  1. You must have Original Medicare.
  2. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can apply for a Medigap policy, but make sure you can leave the Medicare Advantage Plan before your Medigap policy begins.
  3. You pay the private insurance company a monthly premium for your Medigap policy in addition to the monthly Part B premium that you pay to Medicare.
  4. A Medigap policy only covers one person. If you and your spouse both want Medigap coverage, you'll each have to buy separate policies.
  5. You can buy a Medigap policy from any insurance company that's licensed in your state to sell one.
  6. Any standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable even if you have health problems. This means the insurance company can't cancel your Medigap policy as long as you pay the premium.
  7. Some Medigap policies sold in the past cover prescription drugs, but Medigap policies sold after Jan. 1, 2006, aren't allowed to include prescription drug coverage. If you want prescription drug coverage, you can join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D).
  8. It's illegal for anyone to sell you a Medigap policy if you have a Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plan.

Brethren Insurance Services offers Medicare Supplement insurance to Medicare-eligible employees who work 20 or more hours per week at a participating employer with fewer than 20 employees, as well as their Medicare-eligible spouses. This insurance is also available to Medicare-eligible retirees of a Church of the Brethren-affiliated employer, as well as their Medicare-eligible spouses, widows, or widowers.

You must enroll in this plan within the six-month enrollment period that immediately follows your Medicare eligibility date.

What are your numbers?

Health numbers you need to know! numbers

Knowing your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and body mass index are extremely vital in determining whether you are at risk for developing major illnesses, such as heart disease and diabetes. If you know your numbers are out of the healthy range, you can take measures to get yourself back into good health.

Cholesterol

An unexpected heart attack may be caused by years of living with high cholesterol and extra fat stored in the body. Total cholesterol should be 200 or less. You should also ask your doctor what your HDL cholesterol (good) and LDL cholesterol (bad) levels are.

Having high total cholesterol, high LDL or low HDL can put you at risk for a heart attack or stroke. Since there are no symptoms of high cholesterol, it is imperative that you know your numbers.

Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is the amount of force that it takes for your heart to pump blood through your body. High blood pressure, known as hypertension, increases your risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. It can also cause damage to your brain, eyes, and arteries. Blood pressure should be less than 120/80.

Much like cholesterol, many patients with high blood pressure do not experience any symptoms related to the condition, so knowing your numbers is key to good health.

Blood Sugar

Glucose is sugar that is stored in the blood as your main source of energy. If your glucose levels are too high or too low, you can develop diabetes. Normal blood sugar level is under 100 when using the FPG test.

Since diabetes can strike anyone of any age, it is essential that you know your blood sugar number. This is especially true if you experience any of the following symptoms of diabetes: frequent urination, extreme hunger, thirst, unusual weight loss, increased fatigue, or blurry vision. If diabetes is left untreated, it can lead to heart disease, blindness, amputation of the arms or legs, and/or kidney disease.

Body Mass Index

BMI measures your weight in relation to your height. This measurement indicates whether your weight falls within a normal, healthy range. Your BMI should be less than 25. A BMI over 25 indicates that you are overweight and a BMI over 30 indicates that you are obese.

Carrying extra weight can lead to high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions. To figure out your BMI, use the calculator at www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi.

Did you know ...?

Knowing your numbers can reduce your risk of developing some preventable conditions. By taking control of your health, you will reduce your risk of developing illnesses and will increase your chances of living a long, healthy life.

 Long-Term Care InsuranceLTCI

About 10 percent of the people who enter a nursing home will stay there five years or more, according to 2011 Medicare statistics. How will you be able to afford that if you're one of the 10 percent? Consider long-term care insurance, which can provide coverage when you need it.

We provide Long-Term Care Insurance to all Church of the Brethren employees and members, as well as their families and friends. If you are interested in obtaining this coverage, contact Brethren Insurance Services at insurance@cobbt.org or 800-746-1505 for an appointment.
