Greetings!

Welcome to the merry month of May! May brings us Mother's Day, May Day, and Memorial Day. Lesser-known celebrations to remember in May include World Fair Trade Day, celebrated on the second Saturday of May; International Nurses' Day, which is on May 12; and National Smile Month, which is celebrated in the United Kingdom.

NW@L Day 2011 WalkersThere were plenty of smiles at this year's National Walk @ Lunch Day event at the Church of the Brethren General Offices in Elgin, Ill. Despite a few drops of rain, our walkers were strolling through Elgin (and on a specially designed course inside the building, too!) and taking some firm-footed steps toward a healthy lifestyle. We will post some photos of the event soon. Did you participate too? We want to hear from you! Send us an email (and a photo if you have one!) letting us know that you participated.

This month's Prevention 101 focuses on children's health and includes information about child care, what to know during the different childhood developmental stages, dangers associated with adolescence, and what immunization and health information needs to be tracked for your child.

We have also included information about overcoming insomnia and establishing healthy sleep habits.

The Health Care Reform Law's first anniversary was March 23. Included in this month's newsletter is an informational sheet identifying and defining commonly used acronyms for health care.

We hope you enjoy this issue of Insurance Update. Please contact us with any comments or suggestions for future issues.

Health Care Reform Common Acronyms

There are a growing number of acronyms used in health care reform-related materials today. Here is a list of common acronyms and a definition for each.
Insomnia and Healthy Sleep

SleepSleep is as essential to overall health as diet and exercise. Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep or remain asleep. It can include waking up frequently during the night, feeling non-refreshed upon waking, and daytime sleepiness. Insomnia can be acute and last one to several nights, or it can be chronic and last months or years. According to the National Center for Sleep Disorders Research, about 30 to 40 percent of adults report that they have some symptoms of insomnia, with about 10 to 15 percent reporting chronic insomnia.

Long-Term Care Insurance

70 percent of people aged 65 and older will eventually need some form of assisted care and are usually not financially prepared to handle the costs related to these services.

Why not give your loved ones the gift of peace of mind? We provide Long-Term Care insurance at any time during the year. If you are interested in obtaining this coverage, contact Randy Yoder at

ryoder_bbt@brethren.org or 847-622-3362 for an appointment.
