Greetings!
Welcome to the second edition of Insurance Update! We hope you found the first edition interesting and the information useful. Brethren Insurance Services wants to remind everyone that from Oct. 1-31, 2010, there will be an open enrollment period for all of our benefit plans. We are pleased to provide additional benefits for the 2011 plan year, so make sure to look for your enrollment packet and review all the options! New options include a choice of three dental plans, a choice of three vision plans, and a voluntary short-term disability plan. One of these plans should meet the needs of you or your family. Be sure to check the information included in your enrollment packet for details on these benefits. Brethren Insurance Services is also able to provide an open enrollment period for Basic Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment, Supplemental and Dependent Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment, and Long-Term Disability for anyone who has never applied previously for these benefits. Individuals who have applied for these benefits and have been denied by Reliance Standard through Brethren Insurance Services are not eligible for this open enrollment.Don't forget: Long-Term Care insurance plans are also available at anytime, not only during open enrollment! Please let us know what you think about the newsletter and if there is any information you would like to have included! Don't hesitate to contact any one of your Insurance Services team at 800-746-1505 or insurance@brethren.org. We hope that you are as excited about these new benefits as we are! Have a safe and blessed September! |

Are you being stalked by high blood pressure? |
There may be a stealth killer after you. It's called high blood pressure. Doctors call it "the silent killer" because the symptoms usually don't show up until they cause a heart attack, stroke, or organ damage. There are two numbers associated with your blood pressure reading: The top number (systolic pressure) reflects the pressure in your arteries when your heart contracts. The bottom number (diastolic pressure) reflects the pressure when your heart is relaxed. Whether your BP is good or bad is reflected in the chart below:
Do you know your blood pressure? You'll find machines at pharmacies and grocery stores where you can check your BP for free. But your best bet is to have your blood pressure checked by your doctor. If you haven't already, be sure to schedule your routine physical. If you know your BP is high, or if you want to make sure it doesn't get that way, there are some changes you can make to improve your numbers. If you're overweight, you can lower your systolic number by 5 to 20 points for every 22 pounds you lose. Switching to a low-fat diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products can shave off another 8-14 points. Other steps to take: Get less than 2.4 grams of sodium, get 30 minutes or more of exercise most days, and limit yourself to one alcoholic drink per day for women or two for men. Each of these steps can lower that reading by at least two points and as many as nine.
