OCYD Speaks Out for Disney Hotel Workers

ANAHEIM, CA - 6/24/2010 - Orange County Young Democrats led a delegation of community members yesterday to voice their concerns about hotel worker's rights. Leaders within the community, ranging from church leaders, to educators and union leaders, came together on Wednesday in order to speak with senior management about both the reinstatement of Maryann Hegner, a Disney hotel worker, and the general rights of all hotel workers. Hegner, a longtime employee of Disney, was unfairly terminated for voicing her opinions and rallying other employees to speak up for their rights.
Members of the Orange County Young Democrats, including Chair Nick Anas, Political Director Tariq Hoqoq, and Publicity Director Danielle Butterfield took charge and led the group of community members to speak with senior Disney Hotel management In the first successful attempt to actually speak with managers, the group was able to voice their concerns. The individuals emphasized the importance of due process, and the rightful treatment of employees, regardless of seniority. Tariq Hoqoq asked the managers specifically what they would do for the community, besides just take the letter and pass it on.
The delegation stressed to the managers that we were not going to give up on this issue, and that if no further action was taken, they would continue to fight for the rights of the Disney hotel employees. Nick Anas assured ------ that we were "a strong willed coalition, who would not let this fight end without a fair and balanced resolution. We will return if the issue is not resolved in a timely and fair manner."
