Dear Parents,
I hope that you all had a wonderful new year and have worked with your children to set goals. A new year is always a new beginning that can bring a renewal of spirit and dedication.
As a reminder, mid-terms are taking place beginning this Thursday, January 26th and ending on Tuesday, January 31st. A detailed schedule can be found on the Wamogo homepage of the RSD6 website.
I encourage you all to work closely with your child's teachers and monitor his or her progress for the remainder of the school year. If you need anything, please do not hesitate to contact the school. I would like Wamogo to be a partnership where we are all doing "Whatever it Takes" to make each year a successful one for your child.
Please be aware that the CMT and CAPT take place during the month of March. The dates will be March 5th through March 16th. A schedule and letter will be available on-line.
Please make sure that your child gets an appropriate amount of rest and that they have a healthy breakfast. As always, a breakfast program will be available for purchase to start the day. We have spread the testing window over two weeks for your child to focus only on one test per day.
Course registration will take place on February 15th. This is a time for you to sit with your child and review the Program of Studies. The Program of Studies can be found on-line (available February 6th) at www.rsd6.org. Students will have the opportunity to meet with their teachers to discuss which classes best meet their academic needs. If you have any questions about this process, please do not hesitate to call our guidance department. Your child's school counselor will be glad to assist you.
I am excited about all of the positive strides we are making at Wamogo. I encourage you all to attend our parent coffees; the dates are posted online at www.rsd6.org. Also, please consider joining "E-news" by clicking on the revolving "E" on our website. In addition, the WPO is an excellent way to get involved at the school level. The next meeting is on January 30th at 7p.m. in the libary media center.
Please feel free to send me an email, wegan@rsd6.org, or call 860-567-7410 with any questions, concerns, or wonderful things that you might want to share with us. Wamogo is a special place and we are all privileged to be here.
I wish you all the best for 2012.
Sincerely,
Bill Egan

News from Mrs. Pixley, Grade 11 English |
For the past three weeks the junior English classes have been using the netbooks everyday to read and respond to famous American short stories. The students access the junior wiki page at wamogojuniors11.pbworks.com and from there have access to the short story of the day. They can listen to the audio, watch video, and read background information on the short story. More importantly, embedded hyperlinks within each story take the students to a google doc form that they use to respond to the question. The hyperlinks are also used to give additional information on the story, define vocabulary, or prompt student's thinking.
So far the juniors have read "Hills Like White Elephants" by Ernest Hemingway, "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson, "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner, "To Build a Fire" by Jack London, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor, and "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allen Poe. Please feel free to access these short stories by logging into the the wiki (username: student, password: student) at wamogojuniors11.pbworks.com, clicking on the weekly assignment link, and locating the links to the above short stories.

The 23rd annual Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards is the largest juried student art exhibition in the state. As an affiliate of the National Scholastic Art Awards and The Alliance For Young Artists and Writers, the Connecticut region is proud to continue a National tradition established in 1927. This National program was originated to honor the creative efforts of grade 7 to 12 students in public, private and parochial schools. It is now the largest and most senior program of its type in the country. The top award Gold Key winners from each National region will have their art works reviewed by a blue ribbon panel of judges at the National level in March. Select National winners will be exhibited in New York City during June. The National student awards ceremony will be held at Carnegie Hall in mid- June. Selected students will receive an invitation to this event.
"Celebrating the Creative Spirit of Connecticut Youth" is the theme of this exhibition. Our sponsors, the Connecticut Art Education Association and The Hartford Art School, University of Hartford, emphasize that the purpose of this program is not merely a competition of sorts, but a recognition and encouragement of talented students from across the state. Artists, university faculty and professionals in the field have joined to review and select the finest student art works in many art media categories from over 1,500 Connecticut student entries.
The 2012 Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art Awards exhibition features select work from over 130 participating schools. Selected from over 1,500 total art entries, 655 works will be on exhibit at the University of Hartford. Of that number, there were 229 top Gold Key awards [including 98 Gold portfolios], 157 Silver Keys and 267 Honorable Mention awards. All students with Gold Key, Silver Key, and Honorable Mention awards will have their work displayed.

News from Guidance On Exams and Stress
Mid-term exams will soon be upon us. Midterms start on January 26th through the 31st. Students can become very anxious and stressed out. Below are some tips to help you and your child through this process.
- Have good study habits. No two people study alike. Make your own plan that works for you.
- Avoid cramming. You tend to forget things when you cram. Allow time every day to review your test material.
- List your topics to study. This will help you stay on track and better focus on what you need to know.
- Take time to relax, sleep well, eat well, especially the day before your exam.
- Gather your things the night before. We all know when we are looking for something in the morning we won't find it - your calculator, for example.
- During the exam, take time to read the directions carefully so you fully understand what is being asked of you.
- Repeat the question so you fully understand it. Skip the questions you do not understand and go back to them when you are finished. This will allow you to answer all the questions you know first.
- If you have enough time, go back and review your answers. Many times you will find you may have read the question incorrectly the first time around.
- If you feel panicky during the exam, take some deep breaths and take a few stretches to relax your muscles. It has been found that having something in your mouth like a hard candy or gum can actually help you relax.
- After the exam, take some time your yourself - hang out with friends or just watch tv and relax.
In conclusion, better preparation and confidence are the key to avoiding exam stress.
