December 19, 2011

Hello Wamogo Families and Friends,

I am currently working on the Wamogo School Budget for the 2012-2013 school year. We (like all schools in RSD6) are using a Zero-Based budgeting system this year. In a Zero-Based budget I start each line item at 0$ and build up from there with each element of every line item approved.

Zero-Based budgeting can be effective in limiting what is often referred to as "budget creep" or adding a percentage increase from the previous year. Budget creep usually occurs with "Incremental Budgeting" where only the variance from the previous year's budget requires supervisory approval.

I believe that our district approach to the 2012-13 budget is not only educationally responsible, but also realistic based upon the current economic environment in which we all find ourselves.

I will be submitting the Wamogo School budget to the superintendent of schools next week. When we return from the winter break, the administrators of RSD6 will be in full district budget development mode.

Please do not forget to check out our quick links.  We have many blogs and helpful links that should not be missed:

We are constantly striving to improve communication and give relevant and meaningful items to our Wamogo Community. As always, I hope you enjoy this week's e-blast.  We are always open to comments and or suggestions that will help us improve our communication.

I hope that you all have a happy and healthy Holiday season. Enjoy time with family and friends. I look forward to seeing everyone in 2012.  It is hard to believe how quickly time goes by!

Enjoy your week!

Wishing you all the best,

Bill Egan

The Flipped Classroom

What is a "flipped classroom?"

It's an "inverted" teaching structure in which instructional content is delivered outside class, and engagement with the content - skill development and practice, projects and the like - is done in class, under teacher guidance and in collaboration with peers.

A flipped class swaps explanation and lecture, which are usually given in the classroom, with homework activities like math problem sets or writing practice activities. Homework becomes classwork and vice versa.

Usually, teachers flipping their classrooms convey content using technology tools like videos, podcasts or PowerPoint presentations, which students explore on their own time.

Mr. Ranft tried this in his Calculus class this week and here is a link to the video  that he created.  We believe that this concept has much merit and we will see more of it at Wamogo in the coming months.

7th Grade Math
Math 7 classes are working on a WebQuest, in which they go to various web sites to find information and answer questions, and use on-line forms to respond. The link for the WebQuest can be found on my wiki

Congratulations to Clare Burke, Jenna O'Dell and Justin Manley for their acceptance into the New England Music Festival.  These three students are among some of the best singers and instrumentalists in New England and have earned the opportunity to perform with this festival in the middle of March.  The festival will be held at Killingly High School in Killingly, CT and will span over three days.

PSAT Results

PSAT Results Reviewed with Students

The Guidance Department started visiting junior English classes on Friday, December 16th and reviewed students PSAT results. Guidance counselors will continue to finish meeting with the juniors and sophomores this week as well. Students were introduced to "My College QuickStart," which is an online college and career planning kit available free of charge to all students who take the PSAT/NMSQT. It is powered by their responses to the test and provides personalized information that helps students take their next steps toward college. The program includes the following:

My Online Score Report:  An enhanced score report that allows students to review each test question, their answers, and the correct answers with answer explanations

My SAT Study Plan:  A customized SAT study plan based on students' PSAT/NMSQT test performance, highlighting skills for review and practice

My Personality:  A detailed personality test that helps students learn about themselves and discover majors and careers that fit their strengths and interests

My Major & Career Matches:  Extensive information about majors and careers, including insights about what to expect and what courses to take now

My College Matches:  A starter list of colleges based on students' home state and indicated choice of major

Students will need their access code, which is printed on the paper score report that students received in their English class.  This tool can be utilized throughout high school. Using My College QuickStart together with your child is a great way to introduce and guide your child through important aspects of the college-going process.

Visit www.collegeboard.com/quickstart. If you have any questions, feel free to contact your child's counselor.
