Welcome to The Morning Star Update!
|
Greetings!
Fall is finally upon us. Leaves are starting to tumble to the ground whenever the wind blows. Pumpkins are starting to appear on front steps and porches. Autumn-flowering perennials are in bloom. Kairee and I have been working really hard to keep the yard looking shipshape. September flew past, but the highlight of our month was a garden wedding that we hosted over the weekend. View pictures on our blog. It is always wonderful to be a part of such a joyous occasion. I have lots of news for this issue of The Update. Enjoy! |
 Christopher Gulick, Artist
Recently we had the pleasure of having Christopher and Sheryl Gulick stay with us while they were in Manhattan for the opening of Animalia at the Strecker-Nelson Gallery in which Christopher's kinetic sculptures are on display. Beautiful mobiles made out of copper, Christopher's works are nevertheless reminiscent of Joan Miro's or Wassily Kandinsky's paintings. They are a lot of fun to see. Animalia is on exhibit until November 10th.

Hands-free in Manhattan Despite the signs on main streets, people from out of town might not realize that Manhattan is a hands-free city. And even those who see the signs don't always realize what that means. One of our guests was recently given a $140 ticket for picking up her phone to check the time while she was stopped at a red light. She didn't think that she had done anything wrong because she was stopped. But if you are the driver, whether stopped or in motion, you cannot have any electronic devices in your hands. Drive safely, folks! |
Pumpkin Butter My favorite condiment for autumn, Pumpkin Butter is easy to make and can be used in so many ways. Use to top toasted bread, English muffins, or bagels, to top scones or muffins, to fill tarts, as an ice cream topping or to flavor yogurt. Yum! Let me know how you use your pumpkin butter!
3 1/2 c. pumpkin puree 1 c. honey 2 T. lemon juice 1 T. ground Vietnamese cinnamon 1/4 t. ground mace 1/4 t. ground cloves
Place ingredients in a heavy bottomed pan. Stir well. Cook over very low heat for about 45 minutes or until very smooth and thick. Transfer to clean glass jars and refrigerate. Pumpkin Butter keeps for several weeks in the refrigerator. View Stuffed Pumpkin Butter French Toast recipe.

11/22/63 by Stephen King In case you are wondering what the title of this book refers to, it is November 22, 1963 - the date JFK was shot and killed in Dallas. The premise of the book - Maine high school teacher, Jake Epping, is sent back in time by the owner of a local hamburger joint to save JFK. Since the doorway to the past always opens to the same day in 1958, Jake has five years to build a life in the past while he tries to figure out how to fix history. But history does not want to be changed and throws various stumbling blocks in Jake's way. Though not a horror story, in typical Stephen King fashion, this book is incredibly full of vivid details that enable the reader to imagine the characters in their particular places and times. It is a long but fascinating read.

On a final note, I've been working at building boards on Pinterest - just in case you can't get enough of us. If you are a Pinterest fan, search under people for The Morning Star Bed & Breakfast or just click on the Pinterest icon on the Stay In Touch page of our website. By the way, remember to send us your book recommendations, recipes, and comments. It's great to hear from Update readers! As always, I hope that you have enjoyed this issue of The Morning Star Update! Have a great October!

Our New Sign
| |
We're delighted to have our new sign hanging on the front porch. The old sign served us well for 12 years, but had seen a lot of weather. The new sign is carved and painted with The Morning Star logo and was made locally by J.S. Sign. It looks really nice, if I do say so myself.

Wahoo Fire and Ice Grill
| | One of the newest, if not the newest, restaurant in Manhattan is Wahoo Fire & Ice Grill in Aggieville. With an interestingly different menu - Californian to Korean cuisines - Wahoo makes a nice addition to our local restaurant scene. |
