House in July
Welcome to The Morning Star B&B Update!
Greetings!

It seems as though I have so much to write about this month ... my apology for being a few days letting getting the newsletter out! First we had the 4th of July - it was fun, but I am always amazed that fireworks are allowed in town. Then we had the Wellness Retreat which was great and I definitely need to plan another for next year. Read more about the Retreat. We have two new specials at The Morning Star: $10 off the room rate with a two night stay in the month of August; and custom babymoon packages including 20% off spa services at Gaia Salon Spa. Then, of course, there was the weather. Who wasn't talking about the heat and the drought in July? But we've actually had a few rainy mornings so far in August and it was only 65 degrees F. here this morning when I took the dogs out for walk; so maybe it is good that I'm a little late with The Update! Otherwise, maybe all that you would hear about is the weather. What a crazy summer!
Darjeeling Room 2012
Darjeeling Redecorated

One of our big projects this summer was redecorating The Darjeeling Room. In fact, just Friday morning, I hung several of my floral photographs that I had framed for the room.
I wanted the room to have an airy, relaxing feel. The color theme is now pale blue-green and soft white. The bedroom paint is called "Morning Breeze". The bathroom is a custom color. The bedding, curtains, lampshades, wall sconces, and photographs are all new as well.
We are very happy with how the decor turned out. You'll have to see it! I'm still working on getting the new graphics up on our website. With any luck, they'll be up soon. View more photos here
Creamy Baked Tomatoes
Tomatoes Baked in Mint Cream
If you have a bumper crop of tomatoes, or maybe just some great tomatoes that you bought at a farmers' market, you might be looking for some new ideas for what to do with them. This is a recipe that I love. Serve with  bread and it is like eating a deconstructed gourmet pizza.  View recipe here. (One of the ingredients called for is mint-fused vodka. To make, fill a glass jar with clean, fresh mint leaves. Cover leaves with vodka. Seal jar and shake well. Refrigerate for 24 hours and then strain well before using.) Enjoy!
Sea Change by Karen White
Sea Change by Karen White

Having read many of Karen White's novels - my favorites being Beach Trees and On Folly Beach, I've become a fan of her stories. One of the things that I enjoy about her books is the settings - they  are all set in coastal areas of the Southeast. The other is the sense of intrigue. She makes these beach communities seem warm and inviting, though mysteries lie at their hearts. At the center of the suspense, a common theme is family and  the need for second chances. True to form, White's latest book, Sea Change, is set in St. Simons Island, Georgia; but in this novel the ocean seems as menacing as comforting. Ava Whalen, who is terrified of water, has just moved to the island with her new husband and discovers that they each have family secrets that could lead to their undoing.  Part Southern fiction, part modern mystery, and part historical romance with bits of the supernatural, Sea Change is a fun piece of fiction.

Hibiscus
"Lord Baltimore" Hibiscus
These lovely Lord Baltimore Hibiscuses have really brightened up the back yard these past few weeks and are still blooming. Slow to emerge from the ground in the Spring, I always worry that maybe I lost them over winter. But once they come out of dormancy, they grow quite quickly are  are tolerant of the summer heat. My only complaint is that they are a little unruly in form. Because I have them planted up against a fence, they stretch out into the yard for the sun ... and boy do they have quite a reach. One of these years, I'll figure out a tidy solution because I just love the color and am determined to keep them!
As always, thank you for reading The Morning Star Update! Have a great August!

Sincerely,

Laurie Pieper
