House and Garden
Welcome to The Morning Star Update!
Greetings!

Like most of the country, for the past few weeks we've been experiencing pretty high temperatures here in Manhattan, Kansas. To cope, we've been doing our dog-walking, gardening and anything that requires being outside in the early morning hours. Nevertheless, it just doesn't seem right not to have a cookout on the 4th of July. We might be cooking out and eating in! Wishing you a safe and happy holiday!
Ginger
Cherished Ginger
1995 - 2012

With great sadness, we had to say goodbye to our little Ginger in June. But we are so lucky to have had her for 17 years. Ginger had a wonderful and long life. She went to work with Bill almost everyday. In her lifetime, she enjoyed the company of five Boston Terrier sisters - Millie, Lucy, Abbey, Penny and Peachy. It was Lucy, though, with whom she was the best of buddies. Ginger loved any kind of play, especially frisbee and swimming. She was barely past a  year old when we opened The Morning Star and she entertained many guests over the years. We shall miss her.

Mexican-style grilled corn on the cob*
Grilled Corn on the Cob
This is a recipe from Brian in New York. I thought this recipe sounded strange when Brian sent it to me; but I tried it any way, and it makes the best-tasting corn on the cob ever! Thanks, Brian!

4 ears corn on the cob
3 T mayonnaise (fat-free is ok)
2 t. fresh lime juice

2 T. grated Parmesan
1/2 t. chili powder
1/4 t. ground red or cayenne pepper
1/4 t. ground cumin
1/8 t. salt

(1) Clean corn of husks and silk. Wrap corn in buttered aluminum foil. Or for a more traditional presentation ... Pull back the husks to the base of each ear of corn. Remove the silks, but keep the husks. Pull the husks back up. Soak corn in cold water for about 20 minutes.
(2) Prepare medium-hot grill. Spray grill with high heat cooking spray. Place corn on grill. Cook for about 15 minutes or until kernels are tender, turning occasionally to ensure even cooking.
(3) Meanwhile, combine mayonnaise and lime juice in one bowl. Combine cheese and spices in another.
(4) When corn is done cooking, brush with mayo mixture, then sprinkle with cheese mixture. Serve right away.

* The flavors would probably work just as well with steamed corn even though you would be missing the smokiness that comes from grilling.

Send in your recipe. For details see column left.

Wild Blueber
Wild Blueberry Cupcakesry Cupcakes
Of course, few desserts go as well with a cookout as do cupcakes. Wild Blueberry Cupakes is one of the recipes that I posted on my blog this month. I couldn't resist the red, white and blue star cupcake papers for the 4th. Do you have any 4th of July traditions?
Miss Lucy Lily

In Bloom Today: "Miss Lucy" Lily

Two years ago, our friends Jay & Nadine gave us "Miss Lucy" bulbs for the garden - thanks Jay & Nadine! This is the bulbs' second year blooming and the blooms are even larger than last summer. "Miss Lucy" is a double oriental lily and is highly fragrant. (Don't you just love fragrant flowers in the garden?) Each bud takes several days to open as there are a lot of petals to unfurl. You can see this one still has a day or two to go before it is fully open. The petals are snow-white brushed with a delicate pink and green. Since my other lilies are just about done blooming, it is nice to have this beauty opening up. Do you have any fragrant flowers?
Thank you once again for reading The Morning Star Update! Have a happy July ... and stay cool!

Sincerely,

Laurie Pieper

Around the World in 20 Bottles
Della Voce - a delightful Italian restaurant two blocks away from The Morning Star - is very creative when it comes to food but also when it comes to events. Once a month, they are hosting a cocktail night called Around the World in 20 Bottles. For July 10th's event, the theme is rum. Okay, I know that the photo above should be of a bottle of rum, but ... I love Noah's Super Muscles & Fries - which I order almost every time we go to DV. So I just had to show you a picture of that! But you can see our favorite rum cocktail here.
Flamingo
Sunset Zoo
At the beginning of June, I attended Wine in the Wild at the Sunset Zoo. It had been a few years since I had been to the zoo. I had forgotten how relaxing it can be to stroll around, look at the animals and enjoy the landscape, though at this time of year I recommend going in the morning. The zoo just opened a new entrance and gift shop. View more pictures from Sunset Zoo.
