Welcome to The Morning Star Update!
|
Greetings!
I hope that you had a great May. At the B&B, we hosted a wedding and several graduation parties, and well ... it was quite a month of celebrations. It's difficult to believe that it is summer again. The 4th of July and then football season will be here before we know it. We need to slow down and enjoy the here and now before it is past.

Tim's Bourbon Mashed Sweet Potatoes Sent in by Tim from NY ... Not only is this a great recipe, but it was a special treat to hear from Tim since he and his wife Robin got married at The Morning Star a few years ago! Tim says that he doesn't particularly pay attention to measurements when he cooks, but rather goes by taste - hence the measurements given below are suggestions.
4 - 5 large sweet potatoes, washed 1 stick butter 1/2 to 1 c. Bourbon, preferably Maker's Mark 1/4 t. vanilla extract 1/2 c. honey, or to taste 1/4 c. brown sugar, or to taste 1/4 t. ground cinnamon milk or cream, just enough to create desired consistency when mashing
(1) Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Butter potato skins then wrap potatoes in aluminum foil and bake for 45 to 60 minutes or until tender. (I just pierced the potatoes with a knife and them microwaved them- without foil - until done.) (2) Remove potatoes from skins. Place in a large bowl and mash together with remaining ingredients making adjustments to achieve the desired consistency, sweetness, and alcoholic content. (Note the alcohol is not "cooked out" in this recipe.) Enjoy!!! |
Secrets of Eden by Chris Bohjalian Secrets of Eden by Chris Bohjalian is one of the June selections for my reading group. At our May meeting, someone wondering which of the June selections she wanted to read asked what Secrets of Eden is about. Upon reading the blurb on the back of he book out loud, we were all shocked - it just didn't sound like "one of our books." No one fessed up to having been the one to recommend the book, but we weren't all in attendance that evening. Anyhow, I read the book and liked it and in fact, felt surprisingly sucked into the story. However, this book's dark subject matter might make some readers uncomfortable. Secrets of Eden opens with a Baptist minister from a small Vermont community telling the reader about a murder-suicide involving a woman that he had just baptized and her abusive husband. (This, obviously, is the dark subject matter to which I referred above.) But as the saying goes, there is always more to the story than meets the eye; and the "more to the story" is what Secrets of Eden is about. Bohjalian is a talented story-teller. (By the way, I just discovered that Secrets of Eden has been made into a movie starring John Stamos and Anna Gunn.) |
Memorial Day Rose Having just celebrated Memorial Day, I thought that I would share my Memorial Day rose with Update readers. This is a highly fragrant, many petaled, hybrid tea rose with a delicate orchid pink color. Memorial Day is an AARS winner prized for its disease resistance and tolerance of heat ... exactly the traits that we need for growing roses in Kansas. Gorgeous! We just planted Memorial Day a few weeks ago and I look forward to seeing it at its full size of 5' tall.

City Park Rose Garden
| | The James W. Berry Memorial Rose Garden in Manhattan City Park is a short walk from The Morning Star and very worth a visit. I walked up there one morning a few weeks ago to catch the early light and took quite a few pictures of the roses and the fountain. It was quite a treat for me! Pictured here, a spray of Queen Elizabeth roses. I posted some of the other pictures on my blog. View here. |
