Welcome to the Morning Star B&B Newsletter
|
Greetings!
Another month has flown by. Lots has been going on. It's been great having our football regulars and KSU parents back with us at the B & B, but it's hard to believe that October is here already. Lucy has recovered from the ordeals she suffered over the summer. Printing of A Taste of Morning: Recipes from The Morning Star Bed and Breakfast is about to start. (The Great Pumpkin Muffins recipe, below, is one from the book.) Bill will be racing in Australia this month to wind up the 2009 motorcycle season. Since The Morning Star is one of his official sponsors - Fueled by Muffins - maybe he'll have a photo for us for the November Update.

Morning Star Artists and Authors: Tim Forcade
We've had the pleasure of having Tim and Betsy stay with us several times while they were visiting the Strecker-Nelson Art Gallery. Tim is one of the artists whose work is currently featured there as part of the Kansas Masters Invitational (up through Oct. 2nd). He will also be having a show there in January. Mark it on your calendar. Tim specializes in very large scale photographs of things - some recognizable, some not - that produce interesting visual textures. His photographs are stunning when you get a chance to see them in person. To learn more about Tim or to see images of his work, click here. |
The Great Pumpkin Muffins
1 3/4 c. all-purpose flour 1 1/3 c. granulated white sugar 1 1/4 tsp. baking powder 3/4 tsp. baking soda 3/4 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1/2 tsp. ground mace 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/2 tsp. salt 1 c. canned packed pumpkin 2 lg. eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 c. canola oil 1/3 c. water 2 tsp. vanilla extract 1/2 c. pecans, chopped 1/3 c. prunes, chopped 1/3 c. dried apricots, chopped 1/3 c. dried cherries or cranberries 2 tsp. cinnamon sugar
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Prepare 6 jumbo muffin cups with baking spray or with butter and flour. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, mace, nutmeg, and salt. In a medium bowl, whisk together pumpkin, eggs, canola oil, water and vanilla extract. Stir pumpkin mixture into dry ingredients. Fold in nuts and fruits. Divide batter into muffin cups. Using the back of a spoon, shape muffin batter into mounds. Sprinkle muffin tops with cinnamon sugar. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until done. Muffins are firm to the touch and lightly browned when done. Morning Star Readers' Picks
Ken from Kansas especially enjoys finding an author that he likes a lot when that author is a proflic writer. One of his favorite authors is Daniel Silva. I had never read anything by Silva so I decided to start with his first novel, The Unexpected Spy, which was on The New York Times bestseller list back in 1997. It is a stand-alone novel, and not part of a series like Silva's popular Michael Osborne and Gabriel Allon novels. Set in WWII, London, The Unexpected Spy is a very intricate novel about British counterintelligence. It is full of intrigue and tension as the reader tries to figure out who is a spy, who is a double-agent, who is working for whom, and also wonders what really went on behind the scenes of the Normandy invasion. This novel left me interested in reading a good book about WW II history. Click here to let me know what you think about The Unexpected Spy or to pass along your book recommendations. |
