StarQuest Announcements
May 9-13
After reading the information below, follow the link to our website. Printed copies are available at the studio.

  • May 9-13 at St. Paul River Center, adjacent to the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul. This competition is only C Company dances and Boy's Hip Hop. A & B Company dancers, Jazz Production and Competition Ballet do not compete at StarQuest.
  • There are no groups on Wednesday and Thursday - only solos.
  • Friday Hip Hop dancers and Xperience Jazz must be ready by 2:00 p.m. We understand that many of you are in school until after 2:00 p.m. Please make the appropriate arrangements to get to the venue, ready to dance, by 2:00 p.m. Remember that we have absolutely no control over the competition schedule and are not fans of taking dancers out of school. However, this is a huge competition, so our cooperation is necessary to help keep the entire competition on schedule.
  • All Friday classes will run at their regular time at the studio on May 11.
  • Competition Ballet and Jazz Production will meet at their regular times on Saturday, May 12.
  • Dancers must be ready to dance (including being warmed up and stretched) at the time listed on the far right column of the StarQuest schedule. If you need help with hair or make up, please come early.
  • If your dancer has a long break between dances, she/he is free to leave after  checking in with a DanceXchange staff member. Please return to the venue, fully prepared to dance by your next "ready to dance" time.
  • We do not know where the dressing areas will be for this competition. Go to the check in desk (look for trophy and/or clothing sales).
  • Make sure that your dancer has taken care of any props, packed and organized her/his costumes and checked in with our staff before leaving the dressing area once each performance is complete.
  • Dance competitions are a full weekend commitment. Please be prepared to stay late for your awards.

Competition Hair
Please take a 15-30 minutes this week to review and practice the competition hair style. We have spent a lot of time redoing dancers' hair at the competitions. We would prefer to use that time for the dancers to stretch, practice and cheer on their teammates.

Notes about the braid...
  • You must make the part and separate the hair into two sections with binders before starting the braid. The part should go on a diagonal on the left side.
  • Make sure your part is beyond the middle of your left eye.
  • Once you have finished the french braid behind the right ear, continue with a regular braid to the end of the hair and secure with a binder. Braids that end too high up will fall out as the day progresses.
Notes about the bun...
  • Put all of the hair in the hair net BEFORE using any bobby pins and/or hair pins.
  • Wrap the hair net tightly around the bun multiple times and wrap the tail of the hairnet around the base of the pony tail tightly. Pin the end of the hair net into the base of the pony tail.
  • Use the pins to pull the hair net tight and attach the HAIR NET to your dancer's head.
  • Please have many hair nets on hand. These are very inexpensive, but also break very easily. You will not be able to make a proper bun with a broken hair net.

Company Dancer Recital Week Rehearsals
This year's finale routine will be an extended version of our Jazz Production routine. All Company dancers will perform this exciting routine for all three recitals. Company dancers will learn the finale routine in regular class May 21-25. Dancers missing class during that week for any reason must learn the routine before recital rehearsals begin on May 29.

All company dancers must attend the Wednesday, May 30 and Friday, June 1 rehearsals. If you will miss on Tuesday, May 29 or Thursday, May 31 due to a school-related (or otherwise required) conflict, please let us know.

We will order t-shirts for all company dancers who are not in jazz production. T-shirts are $20 each (due May 20) and are required for your finale costume. Recreational dancers and dancers in Jazz Production will have an opportunity to order shirts in early May.

Bravo venue change...

Please note that Bravo had more MN registrations than ever before and has split their competition between two venues. Our section of the competition has been moved to East Ridge High School in Woodbury. The great news about this is that we have been assigned to the smaller of the two competitions. This competition will run on Friday, May 18 and Saturday, May 19. There is no competition on Sunday, May 20!

They are currently working on the details of this schedule and we will hopefully have it in hand by Friday, May 11.
