From the President by Jeff Nass
As you are receiving your Trigger, I am finishing up at NRA headquarters. Wisconsin FORCE received several awards for 2011. I am honored to have been appointed to the NRA's Clubs and Associations Standing Committee and attended my first meeting. I also gave a presentation to the Armed Forces Standing Committee on our Armed Forces Camp (Poolee Program).
This month's picture is myself shooting a limited edition Remington M40 at the Armed Forces Camp in Wausau this summer. The rifle is the United States Marine Corps Scout Sniper edition and is a special edition rifle designed to be a genuine duplicate of the M40s used in Vietnam.
Stay safe in the woods, make sure to help your club offer a safe convenient place for your community to site-in their deer rifles, and help support and promote pro gun candidates.
See you at the range, Jeff

2012 Fall Hunting Forecast
MADISON -- The 2012 Fall Hunting and Trapping Forecast is now available on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website. Hunters, trappers and wildlife enthusiasts will find information on upcoming season structures, deer research and wildlife populations, regional hunting outlooks, wildlife rules and regulation changes and more.
The forecast is broken down into sections that cover upland and small game, waterfowl, deer, bear and furbearers.
With the recently released Deer Trustee report recommending more input from the hunting public the forecast also includes information on how hunters and sportspeople can become more involved with deer management by participating in wildlife surveys and studies.
The forecast also includes a message from DNR Secretary Cathy Stepp encouraging people to help build the next generation of hunter and trapper conservationists by sharing their hunting and trapping experiences though youth hunts, mentored hunts, and learn to hunt programs "so that our grandchildren and great grandchildren can enjoy the outdoor pursuits we have today."
To find a link to the report, visit dnr.wi.gov and search "hunt."

On the Range by Jeff Nass
As deer site-in approaches, the common sense gun case law is now a year old. As with most changes, adjustments must be made. Many clubs use to require that all guns being brought to the firing line during site-in must be left cased. Most people will still use some sort of case to protect their firearms during transport, but you will have some that protect their firearms with systems that cannot leave the vehicle. Many clubs use a "greeter" that stands at an entrance point, guiding customers, giving directions, collecting money, or selling raffle tickets. This year's guidance should continue to include - "if your gun is cased, please leave it cased until told to remove it at the shooting bench" with an addition of "if you do not have a case, the gun must remain unloaded, action open, and pointed in a safe direction." You can also suggest if they have a chamber flag that it must be inserted. Clubs can also serve themselves and their community by having a supply of chamber flags. The flags can be sold to make a little profit, at cost, included in the site-in fee, or given out as a community service. You can order chamber flags from the NRA at http://materials.nrahq.org/go/product.aspx?productid=CT%2017510 or from many on-line retailers such as Midway and Brownells. It may also be beneficial to have Safety officers in your parking area to help your customers. Remember they are your customers and should be treated with respect; they may just need to be educated on safe gun handling. Your site-in represents your club to the community. You want to show them that you run a safe facility. That includes being able to educate people in the safe handling of firearms. Please use your best "people" as greeters and general safety officers as they contact the greater number of visitors.

Hunter Challenge by Jeff Nass
Check out the Hunter Challenge 2012 web page http://dnr.wi.gov/education/outdoorSkills/hunterChallenge/index.html Hunting is important to our Wisconsin heritage, it highlights all things Wisconsin; family, friends, conservation, food, and jobs. But, we're faced with an unfamiliar challenge: the total number of hunters in Wisconsin declined between 2000 and 2010 and studies predict that the decline in hunting participation will continue. We are exploring new tactics for hunter recruitment in the 21st century and two things seem fairly certain: First, it will be hunters leading the effort, and second, we need to broaden and shift the focus somewhat to adults and families who do not already hunt. This is where you come in. Check out the Hunter Challenge 2012 at the DNR website (search keyword "challenge" at dnr.wi.gov). There are maps that provide hunter numbers in three key age groups by county of residence. This will help you track progress in recruiting hunters in your community. This web page also includes new ideas for recruitment, goals for 2012 and a look at last year's results. Get in the Game! Take the Hunter Challenge 2012. You can get your club to take the initiative and invite new hunters. How about your friends who may have stopped hunting recently? Invite them back and challenge them to mentor someone else. Can you and your group sponsor a Learn to Hunt event? How about inviting your kids' friends or your friends' kids to deer camp? To make it easier, new hunters pay only $5 for a license. Please forward this important information to your contacts and fellow hunters. Thank you.
