Greetings from the Dominican Republic!
Dear Friends,
The
last 6 months have brought about so many changes! The Youth Development Center kicked off its'
new programming in Puerto Plata, and the devastating earthquake that rocked
Haiti prompted the "Dove Helping Haiti" Relief.
First,
I would like to thank the people who helped us this past year with their many
gifts and talents and helped kick off our center! Lisa Mastain and Nikki Cochrane were a
tremendous help in organizing and creating the structure of the Youth Development
center and Cathy Flynn served as the Club Director.
Everyone
who knows Melissa Bazely, our Volunteer Coordinator, loves the incredible job
she has done with our volunteer project and this summer as Field Director. Jochy Guerrero our music teacher is doing an incredible job
with the music program, Ernestina Vance Vaughn is our new director and Gymps
(sounds like James) Sunel is our Haiti Director, along with doing a tremendous
job with our older boys program in Puerto Plata. I want to thank them and the many volunteers,
too many to list, who helped along the way.
It is proof to me that if every person does something, together we can
do great things.
As
you may already know, the many 80 plus children we serve live in horrible
conditions and the families usually send them into the streets to work instead
of going to school. We are in the top
countries for sex tourism, and many children end up in prostitution, drugs or
jail, so working on the streets is certainly a prescription for trouble. Plus, the education system here was rated 16th
out of the 17th Latin American countries surveyed. As the problems for these poor children
mount, our Youth Development Center is providing hope for the future of these
young people.
We
have music, theater, dance, arts and crafts, jewelry making, sports and a
weight room program to foster self esteem, teamwork, discipline and
organizational skills along with programs for the mothers to provide food
through our food voucher program and reading and writing classes. My desire is to take this to the next level
and start our vocational training programming.
I have seen miracles in the lives of the people we are serving and give
thanks to God for this opportunity to make a difference in the life of a
child. I am asking you to participate in
this success by making a financial commitment to help us reach our goal of
opening a career training center. It
will provide hands on skills such as cosmetology, sewing classes and
apprenticeship job training programs.
Haiti
has so much opportunity for us to make a difference in the midst of such tragic
and helpless circumstances. It is the
plight of poor children, who were born into their circumstance with no choices
or future that prompted me to do mission work.
Haiti has changed me forever.
There are so many children in crisis that it is the most catastrophic
disaster of our lifetime. I have been
working north of the earthquake zone with the people who were able to get out
of Port au Prince and try to find a new life.
The entire island is in crisis. Our plans to open an orphanage have been
answered, as we have partnered with Fr Andre in Cap Haitian to open an
orphanage in a rented house until we can raise enough money to purchase the
land needed. We have construction and
volunteer opportunities for our specific orphanage where you can help Haiti
too! Please help us with the long term
commitment we have made to Haiti and its children with your financial
support. Please, don't forget
Haiti. The work has just started!
May
God pour his blessings upon you,
Elizabeth McKie Executive Director and Founder Dove Missions

Fundraising Efforts
Diane Wolff is actively submitting
grant proposals to various companies and organizations in hope of securing
Grant monies to help in both the Dominican Republic and our efforts in Haiti. We
are so grateful for her efforts. If you
know of a foundation or organization (maybe even your church or a club you
belong to) that we could submit to help fund our programs, please email Dianne
Wolff at wolffgirl826@yahoo.com.

Our Partner Orphanage located in
Cap Haitian
Our partner orphanage has been up and running
for one month and is now home to 11 children, all under the age of 6. The house
has been rented for 3 years as part of phase one for the ultimate plans for the center.
This
is our dream come true!

Reading and Writing Class
for Mothers Begins
Eleven moms showed up
for our first reading and writing class, so many more than I expected. They
were each given their own notebook, pencil and eraser, and it was like they
were given gold. They all spoke about
how, for whatever reason or another, they were robbed of the chance to learn as
children. Many mothers shared the same story; that they lived in the countryside
and were up by 5 am to help with the chores all day.
Damaris, the class
instructor, spoke to them about not being embarrassed, as there was a bit of
hesitation when they were signing up for this class. She reminded them that
everyone learns at a different pace, and if it takes them a bit longer than the
mom sitting beside them to catch on, remember to just ask questions and
persevere.
One of the moms said her
dream by the end of the classes would be to be able to sit on a bed and read a bedtime
story to her daughter. We are so excited to be able to make that dream come
true.
At the end of the class
one of the grandmothers stood up and started praying with her hands in the air,
the other mothers all chimed in. She thanked God for giving her the opportunity
to learn how to read and write, after all these years. She thanked God for
sending Liz and I into her lives and asked him to bless us always.
They were so happy to be there, it was really heartwarming.

DOVE Missions Group Service Trip
DOVE
Missions is also planning a mission trip to Haiti in early August. It is last
minute, but the perfect time to make a difference! The orphanage has just
opened in May, so the trip will consist of making the orphanage more
"homey", a small construction project, and since we will be staying
in the orphanage, LOTS of activities with the kids! The thing they need most is
our attention, love and affection and we are more than happy to give that to
them!
The
cost of the trip is $1200, and this includes all transportation (except for
airfare to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic), food, accommodations, and
activity and construction costs. The trip will begin and end in the Dominican
Republic, and will also include a day at our youth center. Trip dates are August
6-13, so sign up now! We can't wait to get you registered! |

Sponsor a Child
DOVE Missions is excited to finally have our
sponsorship program in Haiti up and running! We have 12 children awaiting
sponsorship; waiting for someone to commit to loving and supporting them. The
cost of sponsorship is only $40 per month, and this will go directly to living
necessities such as food and medicine in the orphanage. Please contact our
sponsorship coordinator, Melissa Bazely at mbazely@sympatico.ca to find out
more information about our orphanage in Haiti and check out the blog at
www.dovemissionshelpinghaiti.blogspot.com!
