Ma'ema'e Elementary March Parent Bulletin
|
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
"March Madness" is the perfect way to describe the craziness of March. Please take note of changes in bell schedules, holidays, and our first ever "Spring Fest" this month. Third quarter ends on March 9 so there will be no school for students and for teachers, who will be on Directed Leave. But the office will be open on March 9 and during the Spring Vacation that runs from March 12-16. Students and teachers return to school on March 19. This is also the week of our "Spring Fest". Remember that Wednesday, March 21, will be on a regular bell schedule with school ending at 2:15 pm. and A+ and other after school programs will operate on a Friday schedule. Friday, March 23, will be on the Wednesday bell schedule and school will end at 12:25 pm with the after school programs to follow. The "Spring Fest" will be held on March 23 and will begin at 8:30 am in the lower courtyard between the cafeteria and the office. Parents and guests are welcome to watch the program from the upper portion of the courtyard between the Administration building and the sidewalk. The program will run about an hour with every grade level represented. The big field will have limited parking available and if additional parking is needed, you may park at Community Church of Honolulu, Honolulu Central 7th Day Adventist Church, and the Church of Perfect Liberty (all located on Nuuanu Ave.). March 26 is Prince Kuhio Day holiday and there will be no school on that day. If there are any questions regarding our "Spring Fest" please call 595-5400 ext 224 (VP - Mrs. Kobayashi). Mahalo, Pearlene Blaisdell, Principal |

Gr. K Mini Museum Art Exhibit
The Kindergarten Class of 2024 Presents Mini Museum
All of the kindergarteners have been "Dreaming Big ... and Working Hard!" these days as they prepare artwork for their Mini Museum.
The Mini Museum is a display of multi cultural art and interactive activities from around the world. The exhibit will feature vessels, sculptures, prints, and weaving all created by our very own budding young artists under the tutelage of Ms. Alyce Dodge from the Honolulu Academy of Arts.
The kindergarten class sends out a Big Mahalo to the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts Artists in the Schools Program for supporting education and art appreciation in the public schools.
The Mini Museum will be open for viewing in the school library starting Monday, March 19 through the end of the month.

After School Pick Up Reminders
Parents, please make sure your child(ren) know their afterschool pick-up routine. If your child is enrolled in the A+ program, tutoring or other on-campus afterschool program, he/she should report there immediately after school ends. If your child walks home or is being picked up, please remember that school ends at 2:15 PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 12:25 PM on Wednesdays. For safety reasons, students should not loiter or be left unattended on campus after the school day ends. |
Traffic Safety
Adults, parents and guardians please be mindful of traffic signs and drive with caution in the school driveways and parking and drop-off areas. It has been brought to our attention that adults are not adhering to traffic rules. This is not safe for our students, faculty and parents!
This issue was brought to the attention of our JPO police advisor and we were instructed to do the following:
* Take down the license plate number and description of the car
* Friendly reminder about driving safely in the school environment
* Repeat offenders will have their license plate # submitted to the police
Please keep our school campus safe! Think about the safety of our children!
Thank you for your understanding and attention to this matter!

Health Room
Health Room View: Lots of sore throats going around. Some are caused by our vog, some have turned out to be strep throat. If your child does come down with strep throat, remember, it is contagious until they take antibiotics. Please inform your child's teacher or the Health Room if your child has a diagnosis of strep. If there are three or more cases in a classroom I will notify the parents of that room to be on the lookout for those strep signs/symptoms. This applies to other contagious illness also, i.e.: ukus, conjunctivitis, staph infection etc. Please phone the HR, 595-5406, school days 7:30 AM - 2:15 PM. Remember to wear shoes and school t-shirt for those upcoming Spring Field Trips. Thank you, have a lovely vacation.

A request for the photo can be made. Currently there are some missing class photos that are on order through Lifetouch. It does seem to take a while to receive them.

Gifted and Talented
Gifted and Talented Plus EEEThroughout the month of February, the Gifted and Talented students have been engaged in continuing projects related to their webpage building. Some of the projects are cooperative in nature and encourage collaboration, such as their buddy/teamwork photos and reflections. Other projects have been more independent in nature and require the student to research, as well as think about their own opinions. In honor of Presidents' Day, students discovered interesting facts about our 44 U.S. Presidents and also discovered that there are only really 43 "different" names listed as President. Can you answer why that is true? During the month of February and into March, all Ma`ema`e students are trying their hand at writing poetry. Many of the students have found the opportunity enriching, as well as inspiring. Several examples of the "Renshi" or tag poetry that has been written with our guest poet, Ms. Ann Inoshita, will be posted soon on the Ma`ema`e website. There are many opportunities for our budding poets to become "published" both on our site and the Bamboo Ridge Press webpage. More poetry experiences are also being considered as an extension of these lessons that have been sponsored by our PTSA. Please thank them when you see the PTSA board members. |
