Dear Parents and Guardians,
We had our Campus Beautification on October 15 and it was very successful in spite of the rain the night before. Thank you to Mr. Daren Cantrell, who was in charge, the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, parents and students who were present to do a lot of painting and some power washing.
On October 21, our students began their Walkathon in the rain on the Big Field. They were then redirected to walk in the covered areas in our courtyard until the rain stopped. The Walkathon then returned to the Big Field without any further complications. Thank you to Mrs. Vegas, the PTSA parents/grandparents, faculty and students for making this event successful despite the rainy weather.
I hope all of you had a chance or will have a chance to meet with your child(ren's) teacher during parent teacher conferences. Hopefully it was a relaxed and informative meeting for both parent and teacher.
Halloween is one of our main events of the year and this year it was no different. Just about everyone was in costume and there were so many creative ones. It is truly amazing to see the ideas for costumes that students and parents come up with.
We will have our yearly Flu Vaccine on Thursday, November 10, 2011. We are looking for volunteers. If you can help, please contact Mrs. Bedford at 595-5400 x 229 or 595-5406.
November 17 is our School Inspection. Administration, parents, faculty/staff, students and community do a walk through of the school and do a rating on several areas of the campus.
On the 18th of November there will be a PTSA General Meeting in the cafeteria at 5:30 pm followed by dinner and a movie. A flyer and details about this event will be sent out soon.
The Kawananakoa Orchestra, under the direction of Justin Mew, will visit Ma`ema`e School and entertain us on November 21. We look forward to their visit every year.
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone on Thursday, November 24. There will be no school Friday, November 25. School will resume on Monday, November 28.
Mahalo,
Pearlene Blaisdell,

| Vice Principal's Corner
As we close out the 1st quarter, we reflect on the accomplishments and successes that students have met so far, such as learning new routines and procedures. The results have been amazing and we encourage our students to continue their "work hard "ethics and strive toward reaching our goals and meeting more successes in the 2nd quarter. Keep up the good work!
Thank you, parents, for your involvement with the teachers and students. Together we will work toward success for all!
We'd also like to thank our parents and community for the support that you continue to provide to help our children learn.
Strong family and community involvement is a factor to improved academic achievement, higher attendance and better social skills.
Thank you, for your involvement with the teachers and students. Together we will work toward success for all!
One example of parent and community involvement that has helped Ma'ema'e to create a more safe, clean, healthy environment happened on October 15, 2011.
Over a hundred parents, students and community people worked to beautify the school campus!
The Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Girl Scouts and our A+ partners painted the parking stalls and sidewalks. Parents and their children painted sidewalks, poles, benches, curbs and stairs as well. Walls and sidewalks were "power washed." Plants were planted around the school grounds and other chores were done around the campus.
Students and their parents also cleaned our storm water drains and stenciled the "Dump No Waste Protect our Waters for Life" sign near our storm drains. *
Our Campus Beautification Project sponsored by the PTSA under the leadership of Mr. D. Cantrill was indeed a success! Thank you everyone for coming and working together! We look forward to next year's Campus Beautification Day and invite all of you to join in!
* A flyer, "Storm Waste Drains: Tips to Remember" will be sent home to each student through their homeroom classes.
Safety
Emergency Drills
Our faculty, staff and students at Ma'ema'e are prepared for any type of emergency. During the months of September through October everyone learned, reviewed and participated in safety and emergency procedures for the following:
- Earthquake
- Lock down
- Shelter in place
- Fire
- Off campus evacuation
Students were taught what to do in the event of these emergencies and practiced these drills as a school with the assistance of the District 5 Weed and Seed Community Policing Team. Officers gave the school feedback and sound recommendations to improve our procedures.
Our school staff was properly prepared and carried out each drill seriously! They did an exemplary job!
We shall continue to practice our monthly fire drills and refine our emergency procedures each year.
Annual Fire Inspection
The Wyllie Fire Department firefighters conducted our annual fire inspection on Wednesday, October 26, 2011. The school passed the inspection.
We appreciate the time and support of our neighbors the, firefighters, who leave the school with recommendations that can help to make the school a safer more " fire-proof" school.
Thank You!
Let us all continue with our 2011-2012 journey with positive energy. We all look forward to celebrating more successes along the way!
A tremendous thank you goes out to all for your support in helping to get everyone to "Dream Big . . . Work Hard! "
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Sincerely, L. Kobayashi, Vice Principal

From the Cafeteria
Mealtime Reminders
The cost of eating just a lunch for a month (20 school days) is approximately $45.00. Both a breakfast and a lunch eaten daily in an average month is $65.00. We strongly encourage parents to make regular cash deposits into their child's Mealtime account.
We would also like to extend our gratitude to parents/guardians, who have been diligently keeping track of their child's Mealtime account. We appreciate your support and cooperation!
Negative Balance Notices
Just a reminder that our staff will continue to send home negative balance notices through your child. If your child's balance reaches an $11.25 or $2.00 negative balance for a child under the reduced lunch program, he/she will not be able to purchase a lunch (in accordance with Hawaii State Department of Education School Food Service Policy). We strongly encourage parents to make regular deposits into their child's Mealtime account(s).
Adult Breakfast
Parents/adults are welcome to eat breakfast with their child, but due to Federal Rules and Regulations, parents/adults and non-Maemae students are not allowed to eat from the student's plate. Adults may purchase their own breakfast at $2.20 (effective 09/01/11).
Recess Juice/Milk Purchases
Also of note, if your child is under the Federal Lunch program (free or reduced meals) and he/she purchases juice or milk during morning recess, please make sure you have sufficient funds in your child's account to cover these ala carte items.

Mahalo!
We were able to retain our staff until the end of this school year because of your support. Thank you for supporting the school food service in September by purchasing meals.

Health Room
Remember the date: Thursday, November 10,2011: Flu Vaccination Clinic. The clinic will run from 8am-11am. If your child is signed up for the vaccine please be aware of any symptoms of side effects later in the day. They may experience slight fever, congestion, pain or redness at the injection sight, or slight stuffy nose if receiving the flu mist.
Any parents with extra time that morning could volunteer to assist with the escorting of classrooms to and from the cafe. We can always use extra help.
It takes just 10 seconds of washing with soap to kill surface germs. Please be sure to wash all cuts and scrapes or any open skin and cover with a band aid, especially when going out into public spaces. There are now staph bacteria that are antibiotic resistant making them very difficult to contain after a person has become infected. Stay safe.
Happy Turkey Day! Remember to use safe food handling practices when working with fresh poultry and properly refrigerate all food consumed by your family. Have a great month!
Any questions, comments or suggestions, call the HR, school days 7:30-2:30pm, 595-5406. Thank you, H.Bedford, HA
NO PEANUT RULE
Many students have food allergies! One such food is peanuts. Many parents send snacks or food treats to their child(ren)'s classes. Be very careful not to send any food items that have peanuts in them.
Our cafeteria does not cook any food that has peanuts in order to ensure the safety and health of every adult and student.
We ask for your understanding and cooperation. If you have questions, please call the vice principal at 595-5400.

We are fortunate to have the help of Ms. Sandy Domion and Ms. Sandi Vegas as volunteer judges at the event! Students also have been hard at work on the construction and programming of their NXT robot and are ready to give it their best effort on November 5! We send them off with our support and best wishes!

Almost all of our students of Ma`ema`e have now met for their first round of their "Everyone's Enrichment Experience" and have learned so much about ways to balance their energy! They also are learning to set goals for a much healthier way of living and are becoming more mindful of making sound choices regarding foods they eat and activities that they can do in order to help their body grow in the best way. A few of the websites that are being used can also be accessed at home, including the Energy Balance game that the students enjoyed during their experience. Here are the url addresses:

A great interactive site to find tools to share how making food and exercise choices is important but fun.
The site is updated often and includes new "Tips of the Day" that might spark your students' interests.

Parents and 'Ohana are invited to a special assembly on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at 1:00 pm. The NED Show is seen by more than 2.2 million children every year. This is the first time they will be coming to Ma'ema'e School. NED is an acronym that stands for Never Give Up. Encourage Others and Do Your Best. For five days following the NED Show, the Student Council will be selling some of the NED items (mostly yo-yo's) to interested students during morning recess by the cafeteria. (Nov. 9-Nov. 16). Watch for the NED Show flyer being sent home on Friday, Nov. 4 and check out their website at www.theNEDshow.com for more info.
Holiday Food Drive in November
Please join us supporting a food drive for the Hawaii Food Bank during the month of November. (Nov. 1-30). Non-perishable food items will be collected to help needy families in Hawaii this holiday season. The top five most needed food items include canned meats and tuna, canned meals (like spaghetti and meatballs), canned soups, canned vegetables and canned fruits. You can bring food items to your child's classroom or to the office.
Sept. 30 "Dream Big, Work Hard" Pep Rally
The entire school came out for a spirited outdoor assembly to get our third, fourth and fifth graders ready for the first round of HSA testing (which got under way Oct. 17). MC's BS and LW-P led the audience in cheers and positive messages were conveyed by Mrs. Blaisdell, Mrs. Kobayashi and the counselors. Some highlights were the "banner busting" by some of our football-playing students , as well as great performances by our Glee Club, under the direction of Mr. Ibara. We hope the positive message carries over to the first round of HSA as we try to reach AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) in reading and math this school year.
