Ma`ema`e Tech Acitvities Summer 2011

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Here are some summer tech activities for students to do.

Don't forget that you can go to our web site - under "For Parents', there are instructions for installing Type to Learn 4 and Timez Attack. There are also instructions for using Kid Biz.

User names and passwords (when required) will be going home before the end of school. Grades 2-5 children already know their information.  Kindergarten and some of Grade 1 do not know their user names and passwords.

Download Tux Paint (We use this at the beginning of Kindergarten, before we start Kid Pix 3D). This is just a basic paint program, but it will introduce paint tools to the students. (K-1)

Download Tux Typing - the beginning lesson is great for K/1 students. A fish with a letter falls from the sky and the student clicks on the right key. The letter disappears and a penguin eats the fish. Fantastic for K/1/2 to learn where the letters are on the keyboard. Also good letter recognition practice. For grade 3 students, they need to have an understanding of basic keyboarding (which they have had this past year) to do the higher lessons because the letters come down faster. If using this for keyboarding practice, make sure students are using home keys and proper fingering. Almost impossible to break them out of the habit of using pointer finger only.  (K-3)

Download Tux Math - the beginning lesson is great for K/1/2 students. A fish with a number falls from the sky and the student clicks on the right key. The letter disappears and a penguin eats the fish. Fantastic for learning where the numbers are on the keyboard. Also good number recognition practice.  (K-3)

Our school web pages has games that K-2 can practice. For Kindergarten, it's mouse practice. For 1-2, it's more educational.  (K-2)

 interactive sites

KidBiz is unique because it delivers stories and assignments to your child - at his/her individual reading level. What's very important is that the format of Kid Biz is the exact same format as the HSA Reading Test. Students who have been doing Kid Biz on a regular basis are comfortable doing the Reading Test for HSA. User name and password needed.   (1-5)

Discovery Education - Teachers have brought the students in to do interactive lessons on this site.  There are a lot of videos on a variety of topics that the students could explore.  There's a good section on science.  User name and password needed.     (1-5)

User name and password needed.    (2-5)

study island logo

Study Island - Web-based instruction that uses lessons, practice questions, and explanations to reinforce the concepts and skills taught in the classroom.  The program is divided into sections based on subject (reading and math). Topics consist of a lesson and a bank of practice questions with explanations.  This is reinforcement of what is taught in the classroom.  User name and password needed.     (K-4)

*5th graders who used Study Island during the last semester may continue to do so until the end of July)

**Study Island is not set up for the entire school yet - but it will be by summer.

Since the students have not had any experience with this program, please have them do activities only for the grade level they just completed.
