Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are now heading into the final stretch for this school year.  Third quarter Report cards will go home on April 5.  Our third and final HSA testing is scheduled for April and May.

As a reminder, there will be a change in the bell schedule for April 6 and April 7.  On April 6 (Wednesday), school will end at 2:10 pm. instead of 12:20 pm.   On April 7 (Thursday), school will end at 12:20 pm. instead of 2:10 pm because our teachers will be attending a SWIM meeting after school.    Please make note of this change.  Students need to be at A+ afterschool or picked up at the designated release times for these two days.

During the month of April, our teachers (by grade level) will be having an articulation day.  They will meet to discuss the Common Core State Standards that they will be implementing at some point during the next few years.  This new initiative, part of Race to the Top, will impact grades K-5.

Good Friday, a holiday, will be on April 22.  JPO competition is April 28 and Grade 1 Mother's Day Tea will be on April 29.  Grade levels will be wrapping up their final field trips for the year too.

There will be a PTSA General Meeting / Bingo Night on April 15 in the cafeteria.  April is the last month to get everything in order for our Family Night, Friday, May 6.  Please read your bulletin for updated information.

There has been concern about the Japan tsunami victims. It was decided not to organize any school-wide donation drive at this time because of the many efforts already taking place in the community.  You may contact the local chapter of the American Red Cross for more information at www.hawaiiredcross.org or call 739-8109.  The Red Cross is discouraging any kind of material collection, such as food, blankets or toiletry items at this time.  Cash donations are preferred.

Sincerely,

Pearlene Blaisdell

Principal

Afterschool Pick-up Reminders

Parents, please make sure your child (ren) know(s) their afterschool pick-up routine.

If your child is enrolled in the A+ program, tutoring or other on-campus afterschool program, he/she should report there immediately after school ends.

If your child walks home or is being picked up, please remember that school ends at 2:10 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 12:20 p.m. on Wednesdays.  For safety reasons, students should not loiter or be left unattended on campus after the school day ends.

Traffic Safety Fun!

Recently, a Ma`ema`e parent shared an interesting program sponsored by Farmers Hawai`i who has partnered with Hawai`i schools and the Honolulu and Neighbor Island Police Departments to remind drivers to slow down in school zones as part of a Hot Spots program. You may be interested in participating in a new interactive online program, Adventures in Traffic Safety, which provides a fun way for students to learn about traffic safety!

The program was developed to educate children at a young age about traffic safety to form good pedestrian and eventually good driving habits and practices. The program features a superhero character named Safety Officer Sam, who through upbeat music and video game graphics presents important safety information and guides students through the interactive games and quizzes. By visiting the site, you and your child will have fun and also have an opportunity to earn money for our school ($200 if we have 75% of our students participate) and also receive safety tips, discount coupons, and a certificate of completion.

You may visit the site at:www.farmershotspots.com.

Lost and Found

If your child is missing jackets, water bottles, or any other items, please come and check out our office Lost and Found boxes.  Any items not claimed by May 31, 2010 will be donated to Kaumakapili Church.  Our office is open daily from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (except on state holidays and furlough days).

Web-based Programs to Work On At Home

Students in grades 2-5 work on Kid Biz (Reading), Type to Learn 4 (Keyboarding) and Timez Attack (Multiplication).

Go to Ma`ema`e's Web Page - For Parents

On the bottom of the page are links to all three programs and instructions on how to download and install.

If you were not able to install the typing (each homeroom teacher has CD you can borrow to install), the students may use the Grade 2 keyboarding, which is located under the grade two interactive games-called Dance Mat Typing

Gifted and Talented Create Poetry and Webpages

As the third quarter draws to a close and we enter the final adventures of this school year, the Gifted and Talented students of Ma`ema`e have completed many of their online webpage projects.  More entries will be shared as they are completed.  We hope you will visit the school website and click on the Gifted and Talented link at the top of the page:

 http://web.me.com/maemae3/Maemae_Elementary_/Welcome.html .

Within the pages, we also are proud to share the recently completed Renshi poems that were created by the fourth grade G.T. students, thanks to the help of local published poet, Ms. Ann Inoshita.  In 2009, Ms. Inoshita joined three other poets and published a book of Renshi (tagged) poetry called No Choice but to Follow.  As a special project, she visited Ma`ema`e to teach students how to successfully write tag poetry and also publish their work on the Bamboo Ridge website.  Students also participated in blogging the poet as a way to express their feelings related to writing poetry.  You may visit the Bamboo Ridge Press site at:

http://www.bambooridge.com.

Ms. Inoshita has made two encore visits to Ma`ema`e, during the month of March, to share her enthusiasm for teaching poetry to our young fourth grade writers.  We will be excited to see their creations and will share further information related to this wonderful project.

Grade Five Science Fair Project

The annual Grade 5 Science Fair Project was held during the week of March 7 to March 10.  An awards assembly was held on March 10, honoring all students who participated.  Please see the attachment:  2011 Science Fair Project.

The students worked really hard on their project with the help of parents, family, friends and teachers.  Thank you for the tremendous support!
