March Parent Bulletin

March 2011
|
|
|
Dear Parents/Guardians,
We have just completed our second round of HSA testing for grades 3, 4, and 5 in Language Arts and Math. Things went smoother this time because everyone knew what to expect and what to do. A big thank you to parents for sending your child(ren) well rested and prepared on testing days.
On March 3 we will have a special treat. The HPD SWAT Demo team will be on campus to share the different types of vehicles they use in their line of work and how they use canines. A helicopter might be a part of their display too.
We will have a student talent show on Friday, March 4. Also on that same afternoon, the second group of 4th graders, along with their teachers and chaperones, will be going to the Bishop Museum for their overnight visit.
The 5th grade Science Fair starts on March 7. The students set up their displays and then the judges come in on March 8 to score them. Certificates and awards are given out on the 9th of March and the projects are then temporarily displayed for the rest of the school to visit and view.
Third quarter ends on March 10. There is no school on March 11 (furlough) and March 14 -18 (Spring Break). School resumes on Monday, March 21. Then there will be no school for staff and students on the March 25 (holiday) and March 28 (furlough).
On Thursday, April 7, teachers will be excused early from school to attend an HSTA meeting. Therefore, we are changing the bell schedule for these two days. Thursday will be a Wednesday schedule and Wednesday will be a Thursday schedule. Release time for students on Thursday will be 12:20 pm and on Wednesday release time will be 2:10 pm. Please make a note of this and put it on your calendar. If you have any questions please see me or call me at 595-5400 x 225.
Sincerely,
Pearlene Blaisdell,
Principal

"USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer." Breakfast with Your Child Parents/adults are welcome to eat breakfast with their child but due to Federal Rules and Regulations, parents/adults are not allowed to eat from the student's plate. Adults may purchase their own breakfast at $2.00. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Mealtime Reminders We would like to extend our gratitude to parents/guardians who have been keeping track of their child's Mealtime account diligently. We appreciate your support and cooperation! Negative Balance Notices This is just a reminder that our staff will continue to send home negative balance notices (pink slips) through your child. As of March 1, 2011, if your child's balance reaches a $11.75 negative balance or $2.00 negative balance for a child under the reduced lunch program, he/she will not be able to purchase a lunch (in accordance with Hawaii State Department of Education School Food Service Policy). We strongly encourage parents to make regular deposits into their child's Mealtime account(s). Any negative balance on your child's account is money that is owed to the school. This amount will be deducted from the deposit made to your child's account first. Any remaining balance there after is the current account balance. Cash Deposits As of March 1, 2011, the cost of eating both a breakfast and a lunch daily in an average month (20 school days) is approximately $67.00. We strongly encourage parents to make regular cash deposits into their child's Mealtime account. Adult Breakfast For parents or other adults accompanying their child for breakfast, please bring exact change with you to pay for your meal ($2.00 for adults) as we have a very limited change fund. Recess Juice/Milk Purchases Also of note, if your child is under the Federal Lunch program (free or reduced meals) and he/she purchases juice or milk during morning recess, please make sure you have sufficient funds in your child's account to cover these ala carte items.

HEALTH ROOM VIEW
| |
Lots of sore throats going around! Some are caused by our vog; some have turned out to be strep throat. If your child does come down with strep throat, remember, it is contagious until antibiotics are taken. Please inform your child's teacher or the Health Room if your child has a diagnosis of strep. If there are three or more cases in a classroom I will notify the parents of that room to be on the lookout for those strep signs/symptoms. This applies to other contagious illness such as ukus, conjunctivitis, staph infection and etc. Please phone the HR, at 595-5406, school days from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM. Thank you and have a restful, safe and lovely vacation.

Parents signing up for digital versions of the Parent Bulletin need to sign up for our mailing list at http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs046/1102482324905/archive/1103610283020.html
You will receive an e-mail where you can confirm your e-mail address. If you signed up to receive digital copies in the e-mail survey, you will not receive a hardcopy of the bulletin. So don't forget to join the mailing list at the above URL. If you did not have time to sign up, you can go to the Parent Section of the school home page to see the Parent Bulletin Archive. Grades 3-5 - if you haven't downloaded or borrowed the DVDs from the homeroom teacher for Type to Learn 4, please do so. We'd like to encourage the students to practice keyboarding at home (use proper fingering) Information has already gone out, but only a small percentage of students have actually done this. This will help with the HSA testing, since the online testing involves typing answers. |
GIFTED AND TALENTED NEWS

Gifted and Talented Web Alert
Throughout the month of February, our GT students from Grades 1 through 5 have been busy creating personal WebPages. Although they are in the beginning stages, they may be viewed on the Ma`ema`e Website: http://web.me.com/maemae3/Maemae_Elementary/Welcome.html. Just click on the Gifted and Talented tab. Please continue to return to the GT section as it will be revised and updated continually with some very special reflections and creations throughout the last three months of the school year.
The GT classes have also been busy learning to create new Apple projects through iWorks and iLife Suite. Some of these include creating iMovie Trailers and iPhoto Books that will be turned into pdf files. Some of these will be shared online, as well.
Finally, the GT students are also participating in a special online testing opportunity through the Pearson testing group. They will be working in the lab to find out areas in which they show promise. These scores will help them in guiding their future studies, and even possibly may guide them in their careers one day.
