Dear Parents/Guardians,

Kindergarten will celebrate their first 100 days of school on February 2, 2011.  This is an exciting time for teachers and students.

On Friday February 4, we will have our second quarter assembly at 8:30 am in front of the cafeteria on the lawn.  In the afternoon at 12:30 pm we will be entertained by the Kawananakoa Band.  It will be a good time to see our former students who are now band members.

The second round of HSA testing will start during the month of February.  The dates and times have not been finalized.  Our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students know what to expect and we hope they will improve their scores or keep them at meets or exceeds.  We wish them well on this next round of testing.

On Saturday, February 19, we have our Campus Beautification from 8:00-2:00 pm.  Please come out to support your PTSA in improving the quality of our campus.  There will be painting, cleaning and other things to do.  There will also be the Aloha Keiki Run that same day.  I know many of you have signed up for the run and that is great. It is for a good cause too.  Following these events is President's Day, Monday, February 21.  It is a holiday and no school for students.

That is it for February.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Pearlene Blaisdell,

Principal

Vice Principal's Message

Safety, is a priority at Ma`ema`e School.

Please be reminded that school ends at 2:10p.m. Monday through Thursday and at 12:20 p.m. on Wednesday.  We ask that you remind your child(ren) to leave school immediately and if they attend an afterschool program such as  A+, they are to report directly to the cafeteria or room.

Automated Absence Call System

The automated call system for UNEXCUSED ABSENCE(S) went into effect on November, 15, 2010.  Parents receive an automated call around 11:30 a.m. for an unexcused absence.  If you get an automatic call, please call and leave a message with your child's teacher or send a note the next day to your child's teacher explaining the unexcused absence.

Just a reminder that the information from our web page is the most current.  If you are checking information from a DOE website, it may not always be updated.

Deadlines

Geographic Exception Applications for the 2011-2012 School Year

Geographic Exception (GE) applications will be available during the months of January and February (Ma`ema`e Office or any public school).  The deadline for turning in an application is March 1, 2011.  You should consider applying if:

  1. You recently moved or plan to move out of our school district.
  2. You child is here on a GE and you want to enroll a sibling.

If you are applying your child for Kindergarten or your child is entering from a private, mainland or foreign country school, please submit your GE application, along with a 44-cent stamped, self-addressed envelope to the home school where your child would normally attend.  If your child is enrolled in the Hawaii Public School system, please submit your GE application to the public school your child is currently attending.

2011-2012 School Year Registration

Kindergarten

If you reside within our school boundaries and have a child that will be 5 years old this year (born in 2006), please register him/her this month for Kindergarten.  We need an accurate count to plan for Geographic Exceptions for the next school year.

Cafeteria News

Attention:  Meal Price Increases

Effective March 1, 2011, school meal prices will be:

Breakfast

Regular student breakfast                             $1.00

Reduced price student breakfast                   $ .30

Second and subsequent student breakfasts $2.00

Adult breakfast                                              $2.00

Lunch

Regular student lunch                                    $2.35

Reduced price student lunch                          $ .40

Second student entree                                   $1.85

Second student lunch                                     $4.70

Adult lunch                                                      $4.70

Breakfast with Your Child

Parents/adults are welcome to eat breakfast with their child but due to Federal Rules and Regulations, parents/adults are not allowed to eat from the student's plate.   Adults may purchase their own breakfast at $1.90.   Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Mealtime Reminders

We would like to extend our gratitude to parents/guardians who have been keeping track of their child's Mealtime account diligently.   We appreciate your support and cooperation!

Negative Balance Notices

Just a reminder that our staff will continue to send home negative balance notices through your child.   As of January 1, 2011, if your child's balance reaches a $11.00 negative balance or $2.00 negative balance for a child under the reduced lunch program, he/she will not be able to purchase a lunch (in accordance with Hawaii State Department of Education School Food Service Policy).   We strongly encourage parents to make regular deposits into their child's Mealtime account(s).

Student Loans

Elementary schools will provide a regular breakfast and a regular lunch to a student who would like a meal, is not eligible for a free meal, but does not have meal money, unless the balance of advances made by the school to the student will exceed the total of five student lunch prices.

The school will advance the cost to the student for the meal from the school food services account and telephone the parent and/ or send a note home with the student advising the parent that the school has loaned the child the amount needed for the meal(s), and that the loan should be repaid on the following school day.

In the event that your child's account runs into a negative balance, your child will bring a "pink" reminder slip home and we would appreciate a prompt request to make a deposit to clear up the negative balance.

We ask you for your understanding and cooperation.  Thank you.

Cash Deposits

As of January 1, 2011, the cost of eating both a breakfast and a lunch daily in an average month (20 school days) is approximately $63.00.  We strongly encourage parents to make regular cash deposits into their child's Mealtime account.

Adult Breakfast

For parents or other adults accompanying their child for breakfast, please bring exact change with you to pay for your meal ($1.90 for adults) as we have a very limited change fund.

Recess Juice/Milk Purchases

Also of note, if your child is under the Federal Lunch program (free or reduced meals) and he/she purchases juice or milk during morning recess, please make sure you have sufficient funds in your child's account to cover these ala carte items.

Health Room

Health Room View:

Lots of congestion, sore throats and some fevers are circulating through the classes.  Student with fevers over 100" should be at home.  If your child runs a fever at night, please check it again in the morning before sending them to school.  Please, do not try to medicate the fever away and allow them to attend school sick and tired.  Keep them home, encourage rest, give lots of fluids and telephone your physician if fever lasts more than 3-4 days or runs over 102+. Do not forget to call your child's teacher to report your child's absence.  Thank you, H. Bedford.

Gifted and Talented Program

A New Year for G.T.

Our Ma`ema`e Gifted and Talented students returned to welcome in the year 2011 and have been busy reflecting and assessing their accomplishments of 2010.  Their information will soon be shared on the school website in the GT section, and will include ideas related to their robotic progress, their understanding of multi-intelligences and areas in which they show promise, and their growth as a thinking human being.

We have been having deep discussions and doing investigatory lessons related to some interesting concepts about philosophical thought.  These connect well with our 'Ohana values here at school and include the following:

Learning to:

Be Peaceful/Show Kindness

Be Honest/Tell the Truth

Be Tolerant/Accept Other Points ofView

Be Generous/Share

Be Clean/Take Care of Yourself and Your Community

Be Content/See the Positive

Be Disciplined/Work Hard

Be Responsible/Think before You Speak or Act

Be Reflective/Spend Time with Yourself

As you can see, we are making a focused effort to do much more with understanding ourselves and what we can do to become more responsible for our own learning as a 21st Century student.  It will be a wonderful new year of learning!
