November/December
Parent Bulletin

2010

Dear Parents/Guardians,

This is the first year Ma`ema`e is doing HSA online testing for grades 3, 4, and 5.   To this date, we have had to deal with only minor problems with this new form of testing.  We will keep you updated as we move along.

We had our Kalua Pig Fundraiser pickup on October 24, Sunday, from 10:00 am -4:00 pm.  It was a nice sunny day and distribution went smoothly.  A great big "Mahalo" to the Fundraiser coordinators and to all who came out to help.

I hope parents were able to or will meet with their child's teacher(s) during the scheduled Parent/Teacher Conferences from Oct 25 - Nov 5.  It is a time to find out how your child is doing and to get to know more about their teacher(s) too.

We are fortunate to have the Kawananakoa Orchestra, under the direction of Mr. Mew, visit and perform for us on November 9, from 8:30-9:00 in our cafeteria.  We look forward to seeing our former students.  It is also a good time for our 5th graders, who are interested in music, to see what they can look forward to if they go to Kawananakoa Middle School next year.

Grade 5 will begin their Camp experience on Wednesday, November 10, with activities on the big field.  It will continue on Friday, November 12 with a visit to Camp Timberline and then with a return to school for campfire and an overnight sleepover in the cafeteria.  It will end the morning of Saturday, November 13, with parent pickup.

Thursday, November 11, is Veteran's Day.  There is no school.  Please take the time to honor our veteran's of war and those who are still fighting for the continued freedom of our country.

Our PTSA General Meeting will be held Friday, November 19, at 5:30 pm in the cafeteria with a movie to follow.  A movie flyer should be forthcoming.  "Come one, come all!" for a family night of entertainment with food and drink.

Trolley Night will be on December 10 and FLL State Championship at the NBC Arena will be on December 11 from 8-4 pm for the 5th grade GT team.  Thursday, December 16, is the last day of school before winter break begins.  It is a regular school day (8:00-2:10 pm) and the end of second quarter.  Winter break is December 17 to January 3, 2011.  Students return to school January 4, 2011.

Sincerely,

Pearlene Blaisdell,

Principal

VICE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

As the seasons come and go, so do the quarters of the school year.  1st quarter (summer) is over and we are well into the 2nd quarter (fall).

Time goes by so quickly and I believe that celebrating small successes along the way of a long journey is very important.

The teachers and staff have sacrificed much time to "planting the seeds" and continue to nurture and tend to our very important students, your children.   In addition, parents, grandparents, guardians and the community continue to partner with the school to educate our children and we are very fortunate.  I consider this a success!

It is a privilege for me to be working at this school and also a joy to be part of the Ma`ema`e Family.  I celebrate this!

Let us all continue with our 2010-2011 journey with positive energy.  I look forward to celebrating more successes along the way!

A big thank you for all of yoursupport and help given to the school, Happy Thanksgiving!

L. Kobayashi, Vice Principal

HEALTH ROOM

Thank you to all who helped with the Flu Clinic. (It went very well despite having the media on campus the first day back to school after the Fall Intersession)  If this was your child's first flu Shot and they are under the age of nine, please make an appointment with their pediatrician to receive a booster shot no sooner than 4 weeks after Oct. 12, 2010.

If your child did not receive the flu vaccine at the school's free clinic, please be sure to immunize them before the flu starts to move through our state's population.

The Flu Clinic has helped reduce the amount of ill children coming to the health room with high fevers, stops the spread of illness to families at home and helps to keep the students throughout the school healthy.  Thank you to everyone who received the vaccine this year.

The holiday season is right around the corner and parents bring treats to their child's classes.  PLEASE check with the classroom teacher about possible restrictions due to food allergies, especially peanuts.  Please call the health room at 595-5406 during the school day from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM with questions that you may have.

Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and safe Thanksgiving and Winter Break. Aloha!!!

-Heather Bedford, School Health Aide

MA`EMA`E BRAINSTORMS (Gifted and Talented News)

The fifth grade G.T. students have been working with diligence as they prepare for their upcoming First Lego League "Qualifying Tournament" which will be held at the Kalakaua Middle School on November 6, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.  They have been constructing several versions of a Lego NXT robot and have named their team "MA`EMA`E BRAINSTORMS #5003."  The public is welcome to view the tournament, which is free and open to everyone interested in following and supporting our team and robotics, in general.

In preparation for the "Body Forward" missions, all 19 students have been learning to construct and program their robots; however, 10 students will be representing our school in the local, and hopefully, the State Championship to be held at the Neil Blaisdell Center on December 11, 2010.  The team is also sending five of the FLL students to a special event at the Sheraton Waikiki on Thursday, October 28, 2010.  At the request of the Governor's Office, students from Ma`ema`e will showcase their skills with robots at the 25th Annual AFCEA Conference and Exposition, called "C2 of Cyberspace - Key to Asia-Pacific Multinational Operations."  During the day, they will exhibit their construction and programming skills to engineers and technology specialists at the conference.  This will be a great opportunity to share their knowledge before our Qualifying Tournament.

G.T. students from grade 4 are shadowing the Body Forward missions using the NXT robot and similar strategies as the 5th grade FLL team members.  This will prepare them for their participation next year, as our 2011-2012 team!  G.T. students from grades 1-3 are also learning to accurately align and program the more basic RCX version of the Lego robot in order to understand the movement of the system.  Over the years in G.T., they will apply information they are learning and contrast/compare the two different versions of our robots for functional design and mission completion.  We are so proud of all of their efforts.
