Dear Parents,
|
All of our kindergarteners are in school and are making the
necessary adjustments to school life. We have fifth graders who are lunch buddies to our kindergarteners and
are helping to pave the way for our youngsters. This and many other activities come after being in school
for nearly a month. What will the month of September bring? We have our Book Fair that begins
Tuesday, August 31, 2010 and ends Thursday September 2, 2010. We will have parking on the big field
Wednesday after school till 3:00 pm. Our new librarian Ms. Manfredi is very excited and looking forward to
this event. On September 3, 2010, we have our Kindergarten Family Picnic
from 5:00-7:00 pm on the lawn in front of the office on the makai side. Come with your family and join other
kindergarten families. Remember Monday, September 6, 2010, is Labor Day. It is a holiday and there is no school. On Friday, September 10 the first
graders will have breakfast with their grandparents. The grandparents enjoy seeing their grandchildren and watch
them perform for them. It is a
special treat for everyone. Campus Beautification is Saturday, September 19, 2010. It is a work day for faculty, staff and
parents. The scouts, boys and
girls, take part in this activity too. Last year we did a lot of painting. I don't know what's in store for us this year. Please come out and join us if you can. If you drop off your child/ren in the morning before school
starts, please make sure you or a family member are with them. If not, they should be enrolled in the
before school program with the Nuuanu YMCA. There is no supervision for students before the start of
school. It is the same after
school. Students should be picked
up no later than 2:30 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. On Wednesdays pick up should be no
later than 1:00 pm. If children
are in school later, then they should be enrolled in A+. Again there is no
supervision. It is a safety issue
and we will be contacting families who are not following the rules. Our parking lot is busy, but our JPO's are doing a great
job. Thank you to Mrs. Kobayashi,
parents, staff and volunteers. The
colorful signs that our volunteers made are out there and everyone is doing
their best to follow them. Mahalo, Pearlene Blaisdell, Principal

Safe Driving Reminder
| |
Please remember to drive slowly
through the Ma'ema'e Campus and on Kawananakoa Place. Pay attention to stop signs that are placed on our campus
and on Kawananakoa Place. Adhering
to traffic signs posted along the driveways and streets will help to ensure the
safety of our students and neighborhood residents that surround our school

Parking in Spaces reserved for Persons with Disabilities
| |
It is illegal to park in spaces reserved for people with disabilities. If
you were given a citation the penalty would be a fine of $250-$500. (Section
291-57, Hawaii Revised Statues)
Practice good citizenship. Follow the rules and think of others
safety. If you must stop to drop
your child off, park your car or drive to the bus stop shelter. Thank you for your cooperation

have been a few changes to the lunch menu. Please see the Revised Menu. (Attached) Please replace your
current 1st semester menu with this new one. Breakfast with Your Child Parents/adults

Regulations, parents/adults and non-Ma`ema`e students are not allowed to eat
from the student's plate. Adults
may purchase their own breakfast at $1.90. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter

to eat school lunch.

Mealtime Reminders
|
We would
like to extend our gratitude to parents/guardians who have been keeping track
of their child's Mealtime account diligently. We appreciate your support and cooperation! Negative Balance Notices Just a
reminder that our staff will continue to send home negative balance notices
through your child. If your
child's balance reaches a $6.25 negative balance or $1.00 negative balance for a child under the reduced lunch
program, he/she will not be able to purchase a lunch (in accordance with Hawaii
State Department of Education School Food Service Policy). We strongly encourage parents to make
regular deposits into their child's Mealtime account(s).
Cash Deposits The cost
of eating both a breakfast and a lunch daily in an average month (20 school
days) is approximately $63.00. We
strongly encourage parents to make regular cash deposits into their child's
Mealtime account. Adult Breakfast For
parents or other adults accompanying their child for breakfast, please bring
exact change with you to pay for your meal ($1.90 for adults) as we have a very
limited change fund. Recess Juice/Milk Purchases Also of
note, if your child is under the Federal Lunch program (free or reduced meals)
and he/she purchases juice or milk during morning recess, please make sure you
have sufficient funds in your child's account to cover these ala carte items.

Federal Survey Cards
| |
Your child(ren) will soon be taking home the 2010
Federal Survey for your immediate completion. The survey count date is Tuesday, September 8th, 2009, and
completed information must be returned the very next day. Thank you in advance for your cooperation

Book Fair
| |
Our new
librarian, Ms. Manfredi is very excited to announce the annual Fall Book
Fair. This year the event will
begin on Tuesday, August 31 through Thursday, September 2, 2010. Parking on the big field will be

Health Room
|
Please do not send your children to school if they
are ill. Any child with a fever over 100° should be kept at home. If a student
is diagnosed with a communicable disease, please inform the Health Room (HR) or
Teacher, as it helps us keep the disease contained with notices home to the
classroom parents. Remember to check the yellow 1/4 sheet, Health Room
Notes. If a student comes to the
HR, I will send one home to inform you of their visit. Please call the HR if you have any
questions. Parents of Kindergarten students with immunization
deficiencies will be notified shortly. If you receive this notice, you are required to make an appointment with
your child's physician to complete the immunization. You MUST notify the HR of
the appointment date, so we may provisionally keep your student in school. This
is a State of Hawaii requirement. Sometimes
students need to borrow clothes or slippers from the HR. Please return these to the HR in a
timely manner.
The Flu
Clinic will be on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010. Consent forms will be sent home near the end of the month. The deadline for turning in forms will
be 09/09/10. NO forms will be
accepted after this date so be sure to fill out all sections and sign the form
before turning it in. We encourage
all to participate. Please call
the HR, school days 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM if you have any questions, comments or
suggestions at 595-5406. Thank you. H. Bedford, School Health Aide

Gifted & Talented Begins Moving "Body Forward"
|
As our
new school year 2010-2011 began, 27 students were recommended for assessment of
Gifted and Talented services. From
this group, 17 students met the Ma`ema`e standards and have now joined the
original 59 students who moved forward from last year's Gifted and Talented
classes. The students represent
grades one through five, and will be focusing on programs suggested in both
National and State GT guidelines. Their
main focus for the first semester will align with ideas set forth by the First
Lego League's current mission. Students will construct and program robots that will be used to find
solutions to many missions intended to solve body issues of the future. The official FLL statement of intent
for this season is: Through
the 2010 Body ForwardTM Challenge, FLL teams will explore the
cutting-edge world of Biomedical Engineering to discover innovative ways to
repair injuries, overcome genetic predispositions, and maximize the body's
potential, with the intended purpose of leading happier and healthier lives. All GT
students will work on programs related to the Body Forward missions. We wish the Grade 5 students good luck
as they represent our school at the many opportunities in which they will
participate as an FLL competitive team
