MESSAGE FROM WSCA PRESIDENT, MARK LINDEN

Mark Linden, CEC AAC

AUGUST 2012

From the Range

Greetings Fellow Culinarians and Associates

I bring you great news from the national Conference in Orlando. Our Culinary Knowledge Bowl team from Lake Washington Technical College took home the Gold Medal. Team members: Richard Hill, Randall Poole, Sarah Ridges and Margaret Venema. Matthew DiMeo and Janet Shaffer, CWPC, are the team's coaches. The competition was very spirited and extremely close throughout. Having defeated the team that has taken home the honor the last two years is a great accomplishment. Persistence in following a well thought out plan is what it takes to succeed. Congratulations to the team and many thanks to the coaches for a great deal of time spent helping the team along.

We heard from Robert Irvine of Dinner Impossible. Who then laid out a challenge for President Michael Ty to lose 100 pounds, backed up with a $1000.00 bet. Backed up by the Canadian Chefs national President of $500.00. They both weighed in and will have lost the weight by next convention. Michael then challenged all of us to lose weight by next convention as a fund raiser for Chef and the Child Foundation. I have submitted a proposal of a format to use to accomplish this.  We also heard from Paul Prudhomme, a celebrated chef from Louisiana. He inspired us all to remember our roots, cook well and if it did not come out right, do it again. Many other great seminars and events.

There is no formal meeting in August. The Board of Directors will meet to plan for the upcoming year. The next scheduled meeting will be at Oberto's Plant in Kent. We have an informative tour scheduled as well as a reception featuring their products.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Governors Inaugural  Ball slated for January of 2013 is off and running as far as initial meetings go. Once again we have been asked to provide the reception event for this ceremony. It is the 100th anniversary of the Hall of Justice so there is a lot of hype surrounding this. Stay tuned for announcements of assistance needed. We will begin the serious planning for this event at our August Meeting.

August Meeting

The August meeting is scheduled to be a Board of Director's retreat to plan out the upcoming years activities. It will be on August 20th. The time will be from 4PM to 6PM at Western Food Brokers.
