MARCH 2011

March WSCA Meeting

Come one come all, it is our annual President's award ceremony at the Columbia Tower, March 14th. This is going to be a great night, as  we have a fantastic menu planned by Chef James Hassell. The annual awards include Student, Humanitarian, Professional, Associate member and Chef of the Year.

We have a special guest coming to our dinner, it is our National President Michael Ty. Michael is campaining for his 2nd two year term and would like to meet our members and give a short speech.

President of the American Culinary Federation

We also have two other guests, Jennifer Mitchell, MS, RD and Wendy Barkley from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, Child Nutrition Services. They will speak to us about child nutrition and will administer a short survey. It is an important subject and we can find  ways we can help. Our own Chris Plemmons CEC, AAC and Brad Everett are already reaching out to our local schools and teaching Elementary students about how to eat healthier.

So come join us for this festive occasion, the view is always impressive and getting together of our culinary friends is always special this time of year. Please make your reservations early as this event fills up fast. Visit the WSCA Meetings Page to make a reservation.

Last Months Meeting

If you like chocolate you missed a great presentation by owners of Trops Chocolate in Gig Harbor. Larry and Heather dazzled us with their chocolate demonstration. They taught our students how to temper chocolate in a microwave, work with transfer sheets and how to make some of their hand crafted specialty chocolate,  All of their chocolates tasted terrific.

Mark this on your Calendar

On April 11th we are holding a Washington State Chefs Association Apprenticeship Fundraiser. We are inviting local culinary schools to participate in this event. If you are a culinary school and would like to find out more, contact Kevin Blaylock at www.kevin@pnwcuisine.com

We will be preparing appetizers and desserts for your tasting. We will have two categories for the best tasting appetizers and desserts, which all in attendance will be voting.

NEW 2011 STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
Are you a culinary student? Looking for some green?

At the December 2010 Meeting we awarded the Darrell Anderson scholarship to Renton Technical College student Tony Sumpter. Tony received a $1,000.00 scholarship from the association and our local Academy of Chefs chapter. Tony has spent many hours working as a volunteer for the chapter and also works hard to improve his cooking skills.

During our April 2011 meeting we will be presenting our annual Evelyn Enslow scholarship.  Our local America Academy of Chefs and our ACF Washington State Chapter student scholarship applications are available online. The next Scholarship, Evelyn Enslow Scholarship, is due March 15, 2011. Our scholarship applications will be reviewed by our chapter's trustees and the Evelyn Enslow scholarship will be awarded at the April 11th, 2011 meeting. See the scholarships page on our website for details.
Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have ideas for the association.

Sincerely,
