March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

Greetings!

March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.  A Presidential declaration in 1987 sought to bring this issue to a national stage.

Then-President Ronald Reagan stated in a proclamation:

"For many of these people with developmental disabilities there is now the prospect of a brighter future and greater opportunity. Americans are becoming increasingly aware that such disabilities need not keep individuals from realizing their full potential in school, at work or at home, as members of their families and of their communities."

It is important that we continue to increase awareness and build communities that enable individuals with developmental disabilities to reach their full potential as independent, productive and participatory members of our society.

Developmental disability is a natural part of the human experience and affects about 45 million Americans and their families. Community Support Services is just one of over 25 service providers in the Montgomery County area who employ over 10,000 people, providing services to over 2500 people with developmental disabilities. CSS serves over 250 people with developmental disabilities in Montgomery County. Collectively, we strive to create a world where people with developmental disabilities are empowered to live the most independent, productive lives possible in their communities.

Here are some things you can do during Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to help out in your community:
