Greetings!
A couple of weeks ago I was witnessing to a Jewish woman, Yafet, at Grapevine Mills Mall. When I mentioned Jesus walking on the water, she objected saying that people do that there all the time. So, let's look at the text and two options and then consider which option is more believable.
|
John 6:16-21 (NIV)
|
|
Jesus Walks on the Water
When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake, where they got into a boat and set off across the lake for Capernaum. By now it was dark, and Jesus had not yet joined them. A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. When they had rowed three or three and a half miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were terrified. But he said to them, "It is I; don't be afraid." Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.

Option One
|
|
Jesus is God
Option one is that Jesus was God and created all things. Paul wrote in the letter to the Colossians that, "He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For
by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible
and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all
things were created by him and for him." (Colossians 1:15-16)
What God creates He has control over. So it would not be much more than a simple thing for Jesus to suspend the physical laws of gravity and walk across the water.
|
Option Two
|
|
Jesus was a mere man The second option as my friend at the mall pointed out was that Jesus was a mere man walking on stones that were hidden just below the surface of the water. Now let's look at what the text tells us back in John 6. First, it was night. Second, it was stormy as there were high winds. Third, the boat was three and a half miles out into the lake. So what my friend is suggesting that Jesus (a mere man) walked three and a half miles out into a lake stepping on small hidden stones while it was pitch black and storming. Furthermore the disciples that were in the boat managed to row those same three and a half miles out into the lake without running aground on these very same stones that Jesus was walking on! |
Witnessing Tip

Which is more believable? Todd and I were discussing this at the mall on Monday and thought, "why don't we ask someone which option is more believable?" So we asked a man that was standing in the mall and he was glad to help.
The question remains. Which is more believable? My challenge to you is to go and ask some non-believers this question. Please email me and let me know how it goes.

Sharing the Gospel with people is fun and rewarding! It can also be intimidating. I'd like to ask you to prayerfully consider coming out with us and being a "wing man." This would give you a first hand view of what we are doing as we witness to people without any of the pressure to strike up or even participate in the conversation with anyone. Please call or email me and let me know when you would like to go out with us. We'd also be happy to set up a time to role play some witnessing encounters so that you can become more comfortable sharing your faith with others!
God Bless,
Carl Kalbfleisch

Here I am! I
stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the
