Act Global: What's needed for Cultural Transformation?

It's not enough for some companies to change, today we may need a complete cultural transformation. New approaches to business is our only hope of nurturing our global economy and coming out ahead of the game. There are three pre-requisites a company must have in order for transformation to occur: 1) Cultural Agility; 2) Committed Leadership; and 3) Cultural Awareness.

"Cultural Agility" is a term tossed around when organizations, teams, and leaders see the need for a rapid and fresh response to changing market demands. To become agile is to be able to think and react quickly in new ways. There is a desperate need - globally - for flexibility, responsiveness, and innovation to compete with the changing needs of the world economy. In today's global business climate, it's the only way an organization, or for that matter, an individual, will excel. Cultural agility is the key to cultural transformation.

The presence of Committed Leadership is ultimately the only chance an organization has to successfully transform itself. Yet, it isn't a leader's sole responsibility to make decisions regarding how to move forward - he or she must have a cohesive team at the upper management level. The leader's role is to confer, collaborate, ask, listen, and discover what is best needed to overhaul technology, processes, or product lines. But most of all, they need the sensitivity and awareness to know what their people need to engage in the transformation journey.

Cultural Awareness is critical as every culture will have a different priority when determining how decisions are made; what the market needs or wants; and an approach to sales, marketing, development, hiring, and managing employees. If we don't take the time to understand those diverse perspectives, we'll miss the boat in truly being a global organization. A 2010 study by Hay Group found that the top 20 most successful companies in the world devoted more than double the amount of resources to cultural awareness programs than those companies who were not on that list.

Act Local: Silicon Valley's Key to Boosting Innovation: Diversity

Some countries have invested billions of dollars on science parks and top-down clusters to replicate the innovation that comes out of Silicon Valley. It hasn't yet been replicated, because to stimulate innovation, they have to first understand what really makes the Valley tick.

Silicon Valley is so successful, because it supports entrepreneurial experimentation and collective learning. This is what enabled Silicon Valley to race ahead of its long-time competitors.

Best-selling author and urban development expert Richard Florida  studied the growth and success of 50 metropolitan areas in the U.S. and found that the most innovative regions were those with the most gay, bohemian, and immigrant populations.

These groups flourish in Silicon Valley, and its diversity has provided it with great advantage. The key to boosting innovation is to encourage diversity and unleash its power through one's diverse community.

Tips for doing business in Korea

Confucianism

The teachings of Confucius describe a system of behaviors and ethics that stress the obligations of Korean people towards one another. Tip: Read up on Confucianism before doing business in Korea.

The Concept of Kibun

If you hurt someone's kibun you hurt their pride, cause them to lose dignity, and lose face. It is important to maintain a peaceful, comfortable atmosphere at all times. The kibun is damaged if you criticize someone in public.

Tip: Carefully give criticism or feedback on a one-to-one basis.

Business Relations

South Koreans prefer to do business with people with whom they have a personal connection. It is therefore crucial to be introduced by a third-party. Relationships are developed through informal social gatherings that often involve a considerable amount of drinking and eating. Tip: Take the time to socialize in the evenings, it will build trust.

Business Meetings

Appointments are required and should be made 3 to 4 weeks in advance. You should arrive on time. Many South Koreans shake hands and bow, thereby blending both cultural styles. When you leave, say good-bye and bow to each person individually.

Tip: Send an agenda and material about your company with client testimonials prior to the meeting.

Business Cards

Business Cards are exchanged after the initial introductions in a highly ritualized manner. The way you treat someone's business card is indicative of the way you will treat the person. Tip: Take the card, examine it, and deliberately and carefully put it into a safe place.
