Think Global: Be Successful Overseas
It's not enough to know the language! Leaders who go to work overseas are often surprised by how much they thought they knew about a culture, and how little they really do. Here are three ways to begin your cultural transition before you start work with a division or company in a different country:
  1. Check your assumptions. You will hear many things about how people in the other culture get work done, but people are still individuals. Don't assume anyone ever has the same understanding as you do.
  2. Attend workshops. Leading up to your move, find workshops or lectures about doing business in different countries or go to a country-specific conference. Business isn't the same everywhere you go, its completely different!
  3. Immerse yourself in global news. Find publications, websites, and television programs that give you a cross-cultural view of what's going on in the world and insight into how other cultures view global news.

Act Local: Leading Multi-Generational Teams
"For the first time in modern history, workplace demographics now span four generations, meaning that 20-year-old new hires can find themselves working side-by-side with colleagues who are older than they are by 50 years (or even more)." - AARP PDF Article

Common Characteristics of Generations

-Traditionalists (1927-1945) are hard-working, loyal, more submissive and not as tech-savvy.

-Baby Boomers (1946-1964) are work-centric, independent, goal-oriented and competitive.

-Gen X's (born 1965-1980) are individualistic, flexible, want more work-life balance, and are into new technology.

-Gen Y's (born in the mid-80's) are tech-savvy, attention-craving, family-centric, achievement and team-oriented.
