April 2009
Hello again!

Spring break is in noticably in full swing and our steady winds and making for great sailing here in the BVI!

I want to share a recent occassion with you.  A couple of weeks ago, my family and some friends took advantage of an irregular flat calm sea, and went boating on a 24ft powerboat.    The plan was to go to Foxy's Taboo for lunc (which I STILL think has the best burger in the islands) and as we approached the East end of Jost van Dyke, we spotted a few dorsal fins about 50ft from our boat.  We turned slowly and headed toward the brief sighting and within a few minutes we were delighted by a school of 9 dolphins, swimming and jumping close to our bow.  They played with us for about 20 minutes, flicking tails, popping their heads up out of the water and of course, my kids were in absolute awe.  Well, so were the rest of us!

Onward to lunch at Taboo, which was delicious, and finally, we discovered a new, quiet and beautiful, beach which is no small feat after living here for 13 years.  Remind me to tell you how to get there on your next trip to the BVI!

Akasha sailing
The sailing vacation industry has been dominated by catamarans for the last ten year, and this trend is not diminishing any time soon.   The cats only seem to be getting bigger and better and more luxurious.  Whilst there are racing mulithulls in action of 130 ft, a friend of mine is overseeing the building of a 150ft luxury catamaran, which will be for private use only.    Sizes for catamarans like this are still unimaginable in the charter industry, but we are slowly getting there.

In crewed yachts, the mid 55ft is now considered normal and large is replaced by the mid 75ft range.  Let's take a closer look at the 76ft Silhouette cats currenlty in charter.  The newest is King's Ransom, with its predecesors being Zingara, and Akasha, who are already both well known and popular charter boats.  Each of these cats offer more cabin space than a cruise ship and a cockpit and top deck to rival any motor yacht.  They all run with an expert crew of 4 so every need, every request you did not even know you had, is anticipated and taken care of.   They sleep up to 10 guests in enormous ensuite luxury cabins, rates starting at $43,500 per week, all inclusive.   Click on the names of the yachts below to open brochures and note that King's Ransom will be chartering in the Mediterranean this year.

Texas Star underway

Texas Star - 105 ft Azimut, offers an AMAZING special
Probably the largest discount available at this point, is being offered by Texas Star, a beautiful motor yacht that can sleep upto 10 guests in gorgeous surroundings.

Texas Star normally charters for $53,000 per week  which is inclusive with the exception of fuel.  She is currently offering a 7 night charter for $29,000 per week plus expenses.    This is an enormous savings.    Note that this offer is valid for charters that will be completed by August 1, 2009.

Plus expenses works as follows - you pay a prearranged percentage (usually 20% to 30% ) as a provisioning allowance up front and the boat is provisionioned according to your preferences prior to your arrival.  At the end of your charter, you are supplied with receipts for the provisioning, cost of fuel/water and any other applicable expenses.  If the expenses are less than the  prepaid allowance, you will receive the appropriate refund.  If they are more, than you will be asked to pay the difference.   Please note that crew gratuity is not included in the provisioning allowance.

Introducing Soul's Calling

Souls Calling master cabin
 (Master Cabin)

A new Lagoon 500 is now available for charter in the BVI.  This yacht, a 2007 model, has quite a story to tell already.  The owners bought the boat to take a year off and go cruising with their two young children.  They sailed from Nanny Cay, Tortola to Australia and stopped in 80 countries along the way!!!

Soul's Calling is the only owners version Lagoon 500 in charter.  She boasts and enormous Master cabin, which covers the majority of the starboard hull as well as two queen sized ensuite cabins in the port hull.

Crew Alex and Carla have been enjoying outfitting the boat for charter and I had the pleasure of viewing the wonderful results this morning!!    With her great layout, Soul's Calling is perfect for families.
