A Smile In Today's Stressful Times
A Message from the President

Dear Parents,

These are difficult times in the child care industry.  As Treasurer of the New Jersey Child Care Association, I hear many of the stories shared by fellow child care providers that have been forced to cut staffing, services and even closed their doors.

However, our unwavering focus on providing a superior quality of care and education has not changed. Although the economy continues to stress everyone, I am proud to say that Rainbow Academy is growing and becoming stronger!

Our staff is being asked to look for ways to be more efficient, productive and resourceful.  Our director's are looking for ways to provide you with a higher level of customer service.  Our corporate team is bringing in more training programs to build our staff as well as new programs and services that will continually increase the value of the care and education that we provide to your family.

I want to personally thank all of the families at Rainbow Academy for your loyalty and patronage.  We know that without you, we would not be in the strong position that our centers are in today.

You can count on us to "be there" for your families and to continue supporting our communities. Please feel free to contact me directly at guy@rainbowacademy.com  if I can be of service.

Best regards,
Guy Falzarano
President & CEO

Books Come Alive!

Mother reading to child
In order to support the children, it is also necessary to strengthen and support the adults in our communities.

Therefore, the Rainbow Academy Foundation's primary fundraising focus for 2009 is for Literacy Program of New Jersey (LPNJ) whose mission is to enable New Jersey adults  to acquire the necessary basic skills in reading, speaking, and writing English, which will enable them to participate more fully in the daily tasks of family, school, job and community.
To kick-off our fundraising efforts, we are launching the "BOOKS COME ALIVE" program which encourage students and their parents/guardians to read books together for one month which at the same time will raise money for Literacy Programs of New Jersey.

Each child and parent/guardian will receive a form where they will list each book that they read.  During the month of reading, the child and parent/guardian will ask friends, family members, co-workers etc. to sponsor the student by pledging money for each book that they read.

To make the books come alive, Rainbow Academy will host a party to celebrate the reading event and the LPNJ will host a special guest to read to the children at the event.  Some of the guests including a real
Fireman, Martial Arts Instuctor and Nurse.

Visit the Rainbow Academy Foundation webpage for more information on how to get involved!

Child Care Savings Plan!
In this difficult  economy, everyone is looking for ways to cut expenses.  That's why we are sharing a bit of information that may help to save on child care costs.

Depending on your employer, many offer benefit plans include an option for a Flexible Spending Account (FSA). The FSA allows you to use tax-free dollars to pay for certain medical and/or dependent care expenses, including child care.  There are two types of FSAs: a Medical FSA (for eligible medical services provided to you, your spouse or your dependent) and a Dependent Care FSA (for eligible dependent care expenses). Since the government is not taxing those dollars, you will have more money available to put toward your child care expenses!

Check with your employer to see if a Flexible Spending Account is something that is available for you!

At Rainbow Academy, many of us are parents too!  We know that parents often have questions about how to handle different situations that occur with young children.  Bernadette is a former Pre-K teacher and director who answers these questions on Ask the Expert...a blog that can be found by clicking the crayon on the homepage of RainbowAcademy.com.
A recent post on the "Ask the Expert" blog:
A Smile In Today's Stressful Times
Loss of jobs, foreclosure and low investor confidence are a few of the many stressful headlines that seem to dominate our news. While promises of hope and change loom in our thoughts, adults can't help but to feel added stress. Unfortunately, that stress tends to affect everyone around us, including our children.

The solutions for many of the problems in today's world will take time to figure out, however, as a family, we can take a moment to focus on some of the more positive aspects of our day and life in general. In "The Sound of Music," Julie Andrews starts by singing a list of her favorite things, starting with "raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens."

At home and in school, we can set aside a few moments each day to keep a list of some of the simple things that make us smile or like in the movie, a few of our favorite things. I have so many favorite things: the smell of flowers blossoming, receiving a card in the mail, the sound of laughter, my husbands smile, a good book and a piece of chocolate are just a few that bring a smile to my face.

As a family, make a daily or weekly list of things that make you happy. If you keep the lists together, you can compare days and see which days you were happier and look for the changes or additions to your list. Remember... it's your family's list, so nothing should be considered silly or insignificant as long as it makes someone in the room smile.
While we may not be able to solve the world's stress, sharing our happy thoughts with each other will remind us of the little things in life that we can often take for granted... like a child's laughter or a good piece of Godiva chocolate!
