A Helping Hand
Recently, a Rainbow Academy family in Cranford,  the Loureiro's, lost everything they had in a devastating fire in their home.  To show our support and concern, the Rainbow Academy centers and The Rainbow Academy Foundation worked together with staff and parents to raise money and provide giftcards for needed furniture, clothing and supplies. The Loureiro family recently a letter expressing their appreciation, which we wanted to share with you.
"Dear Rainbow Family,
November 17th was a night which changed our lives in ways we never imagined, but the most important thing that my husband and I have realized is how blessed we are.  Not only do we still have each other, but now we know that we have an amazing support system, a real family of extremely caring individuals at Rainbow Academy.  If this had not happened to us, I don't think we would ever have known how much people really care for each other, or how generous and loving people can be.
We want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for every kind though, word, gesture and gift which you have sent our way.  A special thank you also to the Rainbow Academy staff for being so compassionate and going above and beyond in setting everything up and for taking such good care of Matthew when he needed it most!

Our most sincere thanks and love in this holiday season!
-Sarah, John and Matthew Loureiro"

Tips for the Ride Home

We know that traveling with young children can be a challenge...especially after picking them up at the center right before dinner time!

Here are a few tips for the car ride home.

Check to make sure that your child didn't have a last moment accident - check your child's diaper and ask if they need a visit to the bathroom.

Have a comfortable, well fitting and secure car seats for your kids!  Sitting on a toy or hardened fruit snacks can make for an uncomfortable ride and of course, a well fitting car seat is mandatory for both comfort and safety.

Pack a travel bag equipped with all necessary goodies.  Snacks, drinks, wipes, diapers, etc.
Easy to hold items that they can manage on their own work best.

Make sure they have something that can keep them occupied on the ride home.  Maybe some playful music, a book on tape or a dvd...something interactive keeps them engaged for longer periods of time.

Happy and Safe Travels!

A Message from the President

Dear Parents,

I hope that your family enjoyed a safe holiday and a Happy New Year!  I think that everyone is welcoming the new year with open arms.  2008 was a difficult year for many of us, but I want to make sure and thank each and every one of you for being a Rainbow Academy parent.  Due to your patronage of our centers, this company has been able to persevere and in many cases, grow.  In large part, we have you to thank.  Your referrals and loyalty are appreciated and we will continue to give you the best that we have to offer.

With the New Year upon us, you will notice some changes taking place.  From an IT aspect, we are upgrading our centers from DSL to FIOS or T1 lines as available.

We are also installing additional security measures to ensure that the ParentView system is secured and can meet the advanced standards that are expected in larger corporations.  While we cannot guarantee that your company policies will allow you access, we are doing everything we can to make sure that our security standards are the highest.

As always, please feel free to contact me directly at guy@rainbowacademy.com if I can be of service.

Best regards,
Guy Falzarano

A recent post on the Ask the Expert blog:
A Winter Guide to Addressing Your Child's Sneezes and Sniffles

With the temperatures quickly falling, this is the time of the year when parents are in an all-out war against the common cold. Children are coming home from childcare or school with the sneezes and the sniffles; parents need to know when it is appropriate for their children to stay home.

It is certainly a constant struggle balancing an ill child's needs with job responsibilities and other daily commitments that adults must deal with. Of course, it is important to note, that sick children should be seen by a pediatrician. Below are some suggestions that should be used simply as a guide to help answer the age-old question: "My child is sick. What do I do?"

· Listen if your child says he does not feel well enough to go to school, especially if he is always eager to attend.
· If your child is sick at school and needs to come home, develop a back-up plan if you can't pick her up within an hour.
· Stockpile a couple of sick days or vacation days in case you need to stay home with your child.
· When your child needs to be home, and you need to be at work, see if a friend or relative can be relied upon to watch the little one.
· Make sure your child has enough sleep, as it helps ward off illness and speeds recuperation.
· Dress your children adequately. Several thin layers will keep them dry and warm. Clothing for children should consist of thermal long johns, turtlenecks, one or two shirts, pants, sweater, coat, warm socks, boots, gloves or mittens, and a hat.
· Follow proper hygiene, such as frequent and thorough hand washing, sanitizing toys and doorknobs, etc.
· Inform your child's teacher if you gave her any medication before school.
· Tell your child's teacher if he is on a new diet or had eaten food that could cause stomach problems.

Don't send your child to school if he has severe pain or a temperature above 101.5 degrees, or has any flu-like symptoms, such as vomiting, a sore throat and severe coughing. Other ailments, such as acute diarrhea, yellow eyes with discharge, infected, untreated skin patches, rapid breathing, skin lesions that are weeping or bleeding, and blood in the urine, calls for an immediate visit to a pediatrician.

And, never, ever send your child to school with over-the-counter medication without a doctor's prescription and or prescription medication that has not been prescribed for the current illness. Staff will not be able to administer any medicine without up-to-date/current authorization from your child's doctor.

Whether this winter brings severe storms, light dustings or just cold temperatures, I hope these tips will help keep your child safe, warm and healthy. And, perhaps, give you a little peace of mind.

**Reminder: it is important to note, that sick children should be seen by a pediatrician.
