raw filletDid You Know?  Sustainable FAQs

This is the first in a series of frequently asked questions about the fish farming industry and how Australis is pioneering new ways to feed our world using safe and sustainable practices.

Q: What can you tell me about mercury, PCBs and other contaminants?

Issue:  In some aquaculture diets, high rates of fish meal and fish oil are used to provide energy-dense nutrition for the fish and to boost omega-3 levels. The trouble is, these fish oils often contain trace levels of mercury, PCBs and other pollutants that can accumulate in the fish's flesh. Studies have shown that farmed salmon, for example, has worrisome levels of contaminants that could potentially lead to a number of health problems.

Australis' Approach: At Australis, we've spent years carefully formulating and customizing our feed to meet the highest standards for sustainability, health and food safety. Our barramundi are fed a largely vegetarian diet of soy, canola and other grains; with only 20% fish meal and fish oil versus 50% for a typical salmon diet. We use only natural ingredients and sustainably harvested fish meal that contains no mammalian animal products. As a result, independent lab tests confirm no detectable mercury, PCBs or other contaminants. You can feel confident that Australis Barramundi is a safe choice for your entire family.
Zagat Buzz: Chefs Go Fishing For Sustainable Seafood
Zagat Buzz, an online newsletter sent to almost one million people nationwide, wrote about sustainable seafood and featured Australis: "Improved fish-farming techniques are another boon for sustainably minded chefs.  Australis US-farmed Barramundi, for example, is raised indoors with a special system that keeps the water clean.  The fish meets environmental and sustainability standards and has been given a place on Seafood Watch's "Better Choice" listing."  Read the full Zagat article to learn how more chefs are using Australis Barramundi and other sustainable fish to make a positive impact on the health of our ocean Read More...
