Mail Art
What can you say about "labour" and "work"? If a picture is worth a thousand words - maybe you'd like to put your thoughts down on a 5 inch x 7 inch postcard and mail to Ed Varney for a Mayworks Mail Art Exhibition on Vancouver Island.
We are planning a few collage workshops in the Downtown Eastside to facilitate creating mail art on this theme. Our volunteers arrive with materials, glue, scissors and time to hang out while we "create community through art."
If you'd like to participate, contact us. More information click here. We'll add any open workshops there when they're finalized.
Deadline for postmark is April 1.

| Visual Arts In Vancouver, a homeless shelter gets an art installation
An article in the Globe & Mail by Marsha Lederman
The dining hall at the Union Gospel Mission's new facility in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside is a model of efficiency. With its cafeteria set-up, family-style seating and huge food-storage area, it's a vast improvement over the cheek-by-jowl communal-table arrangement that preceded the new $29-million building, which opened last April. But it's fairly obvious that the immense room, with its big, blank, mustard-and-grey walls, could use a little something. Like some art.

Art Cart is a mobile art gallery and vending cart for the communities of Gallery Gachet and Oppenheimer Park. The Art Cart is a vessel for artists to transport and sell their work, as well as a being a hub for curated exhibitions and projects, community workshops and public events. Art Cart seeks alternatives for "artist space", and in its own way represents an act of creative survival and resistance. Developed in collaboration between Oppenheimer Park and Gallery Gachet, Art Cart aims to support artist exposure, creative exchange, and art sales. Like drawing, it can be unhinged from convention as it navigates the shifting possibilities for art in the local cultural realm - who makes it, who shows it, who sees it and who sells it.

2nd Annual Songs of Mahalia Jackson An Evening of Music with Dalannah Gail Bowen
100 years ago, on October 26, 1911, a child was born who would change the face of gospel music for all time. Born in New Orleans and living most of her life in Chicago, Mahalia Jackson is considered by many to be the greatest gospel singer of our time.
Her vocal style, resounding passion and devotion to the church left an impact on everyone who heard her and she is recognized as the single most important influence on modern-day gospel. Her many recordings continue to be popular with audiences young and old alike.
This musical tribute to Mahalia Jackson is a celebration of gospel music and Mahalia's legacy, featuring an all-star cast including:
- Dalannah Gail Bowen, who is a survivor of homelessness and addiction and who continues to live and work in the Downtown Eastside, will be singing the lead for The Songs of Mahalia Jackson.
- Grammy-nominated keyboardist and Musical Director Michael Creber will be leading the rhythm section, background vocals provided by The Jacksonaires with Joanie Bye, Linda Kidder and well-known actor/singer Tom Pickett rounding out the sound.
The evening promises to be a fitting tribute to the world-renowned gospel singer with Mahalia's classic gospel sound.

Community Arts Networking Series
We have now offered two workshops in our new Community Arts Networking Series for 2012 and are very pleased with how this new initiative is unfolding. For those of you who are new to this newsletter, our Networking Series is a series of workshops held on the last Monday of the month during the afternoon, in which we explore a particular topic through presentations by guest speakers as well as interactive small-group discussions in order to facilitate networking opportunities amongst attendees. At the end of each session, workshop attendees are invited to suggest topics for future sessions later in the year.
Our January workshop focused on the use of various social media platforms in promoting one's organization/work and networking with others. The February session entailed a very thorough overview by Judi Piggott of BC's various group designations (charity, nonprofit, cooperative, social enterprise, etc.) and accompanying guidelines. Below are the workshops slated for March, April and May, along with their respective links for registering.
