Art(IS)Land Exhibition on Granville Island

Sept 8-19 2011

If you were visiting Granville Island in September perhaps you noticed a giant sewer pipe inscribed with text, foliage fish swimming through the trees, or a fluorescent clam line. These were just three of the eleven temporary installations created by members of  Art is Land Network (AILN).

AILN is a local artist collective whose shared connection is the use of natural and repurposed materials to engage with the landscape. The participating AILN artists were Nicole Dextras, Sharon Kallis, Pierre Leichner, Fae Logie, Tiki Mulvihill, Haruko Okano, Robin Ripley, Shirley Wiebe.

The exhibition theme was Granville Island as "microcosm of the world". Each artist used different strategies and materials to engage with the community and draw attention to the island's diverse activities and its inhabitants, both past and present. Information on the exhibition and a self-guided map were available through the AILN website and the Fringe Festival program guide.

Project partners included Vancouver Park Board, Fringe Festival, Community Arts Council of Vancouver and Granville Island.

Four artist-led walking tours provided information about the artists and their work, as well as a history of the island. The tours attracted 94 participants and feedback indicated they were well appreciated. Workshops, a blogsite, and on site participation were other aspects of the Art(IS)Land exhibit.

Eco-Arts Salon

LAST MINUTE REMINDER - SEE YOU TOMORROW!

Tuesday December 6 - Haruko Okano   (Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden)

Flotsam

An Eco-Arts Salon & Workshop with Haruko Okano
Tuesday, December 6 | 7-9pm
Hall Of One Hundred Rivers

Following a presentation and discussion about her art practice, Haruko Okano, an environmental artist, invites guests to make ephemeral tea candle boats that will be included in this year's Winter Solstice Festival at the Garden on December 21. These boats will be made from natural materials gathered from the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden and the adjacent public park.

Haruko Okano is a professional, interdisciplinary, process based artist with over 30 years experience. She has been part of the environmental art movement in Canada since 1995. Many of her projects include partnering with local community, involving them in the gathering of materials or adding their personal touches to installations such as Commentree mounted for the Richmond Art Gallery and the Touchstone Museum of Art and History, Nelson (2007). Her work includes elements from her Japanese ancestry and holistic traditions common to many cultures in the world of hunter and gatherers. She also is a workshop facilitator and mentor in the arts.

RSVP required. Please sign up here.

The Lightness of Hope

An Eco-Arts Installation by Haruko Okano

December 6 - 23, 2011
10am-4:30pm

Tuesdays - Sundays

Entrance Included in Admission
FREE for Garden Members

December marks the darkest time of the year but also marks the beginning of the return of the light. The Lightness of Hope installation focuses on this moment of changes as synonymous with human nature in its darkest hour, where sometimes comes a glimmer of light giving rise to hope. One's hope then provides the courage to endure, to act, to believe in change for the better. The Lightness of Hope installation invites the public to take a moment to reflect on humanity's future and to write down their hopes on tags provided by the artist, which they attach to the installation and then to light incense, carrying their hopes up into the heavens.

Eco-Art Salon LogoCalling all Community-based Eco-Artists!

We are currently booking the Eco Arts Salons for February-June 2012. These monthly evening presentations showcase your work to the public with opportunities for feedback, networking and community participation.

The objective of these salons is to create a space for stimulating dialogue around questions such as "What does it mean to be an environmental artist?" and "What is the potential for community engaged environmental art in Vancouver?" Each presenter, professional or project-based, is also asked to facilitate a hands-on component as part of their salon which could involve group writing, making, musical components, etc.

These events are held on the 4th Wednesday of each month at the Roundhouse Community Art and Recreation Centre from 7-9pm.

If your art practice engages with ideas of community-building and centers on the environment, we'd like to see your work at our Salons. We will be selecting 5 artists or collaborative groups to feature in the upcoming Salons.

Artists receive a $200 honorarium for the presentation.

Requirements

Your artistic practice might include performative work (e.g. dramatic, dance), sound-art, time-based art (e.g. film), sculptural works, 2D artwork or literary art (e.g. story-telling, spoken word). You might have a particular project within your practice that you would like to feature.

It must engage with community in its production or in its reception.

It should be something that can be defined as "Eco-Art".

This could include low impact (e.g. reuses materials, is ephemeral, is site-specific) works, or might centre on environmental awareness, education or causes.

Deadline

Submit your suggestions for an Eco Arts Salon to eco-arts@cacv.ca no later than Friday, January 6, 2012.
