Community Arts Council of Vancouver

creates community through the arts.

Our mission: to be the voice for the community arts in Vancouver. We explore critical social issues through creative processes. We foster and support programs, practices and initiatives that develop common understanding through shared experiences.

Greetings!

It is definitely harvest time for the Community Arts Council of Vancouver.

Our Anniversary has been a great opportunity to connect with people from our rich history of 65 years in this wonderful city.  Meet some of our past presidents online with interviews by Maz Ghaderi.

We plan to host community arts dialogues twice per year. We expect about 50 participants at the event this Saturday. Hope you can make it. Register here

The enthusiasm, experience and all-round niceness of the organizations who have stepped up to be involved with us in presenting a celebration of youth/kids/community/arts on Nov 26 is truly gratifying.

Help us plan by registering here.  You are free, of course, to come by for a short time or a long time. We will send updates on the schedule to those who register so you can pick the best time for you.

Thank you to Vancity - also celebrating 65 years - for financial support for this series of anniversary events.

And a very big THANK YOU to our board and volunteers who make it all happen. There are always opportunities to join us and contribute your talents to "creating community through the arts" in Vancouver. Drop me a note if you have some time to offer.

Sincerely,

Mary Bennett,
Administrator, CACV

Our 2011 Survey is now complete

Thank you to those of you who completed our recent Community Arts Survey.  We received 187 responses, well over our initial goal of 100!  The answers, comments and recommendations provided allow us significant insight into what issues are currently of importance as well as the kinds of new programming and development you would like to see happen.

We plan to reveal some initial survey results this coming Saturday, Nov. 5, at our Community Arts Dialogue. We will also be doing a short presentation n survey results at our Annual General Meeting on Thursday evening November 24.

You can see details about the event at http://cacv.ca/dialogue and see the impressive list of presenters at http://cacv.ca/dialogue-presenters. It's free, but we'd appreciate your registering so we can plan for the appropriate numbers. Here is the link to register:  http://artsdialogue-eorg.eventbrite.com/

The Dialogue, in partnership with SFU Woodward's, morning agenda includes presentations by 10 community artists in such mediums as theatre, dance, song and environmental arts.  In the afternoon, there will be an Open Dialogue sessions to facilitate networking; share tools, resources and best practicies; and identify needs for community arts in Vancouver.

And as mentioned, we will share some preliminary results of the survey, such as:

1. Respondents who self-identified as a "Funder" of community arts indicated that "Artistic merit of the outcome" is the most important feature of community arts.
2. For the "Resources and support" desired, "Support for grant applications" was the most popular response.
3. Although many are satisfied with the CACV's definition of Community Arts, others find it "boring," "lacking joy," and problematic in its use of the term "intentional inclusivity."
