Community Arts Council of Vancouver

creates community through the arts.

Our mission: CACV is the voice for the community arts in Vancouver. We explore critical social issues through creative processes. CACV fosters and supports programs, practices and initiatives that develop common understanding through shared experiences.

From its founding in 1946 as the first community arts council in North America to today, CACV has been influential in the arts and culture scene in Vancouver. 2010 program priorities are to support community arts programming and infrastructure in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver; provide leadership in community arts in the City as a whole; and be a leader in the developing field of environmental art.

Greetings!

We were very happy to have 20 people attend the Grant Writing Workshop that I and our board secretary, Sonja Embree, offered.  We had set the date, booked the room, planned the agenda and then... got busy with other things and were thinking about cancelling.

One intrepid potential participant had heard through the verbal grapevine we were doing it and called. I said, "Well, we'll go ahead with it if it doesn't bother you if you're the only one."  So, sent the word out to our DTES network and wow! 20 people showed up.  Michael Clague says, "It's the Vancouver way!" He means people (and I know I'm one of them) leave registration to the last minute anyways.

That said, with the enthusiasm - several people said they'd like to do it but weren't available and the folks who attended were very pleased - we're doing an encore!

HOTCF poster

With a focus on the rich and diverse communities of the Downtown Eastside, the eighth Annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival celebrates the creative and committed artists and activists who thrive in the heart of Vancouver.

The festival features twelve days of music, poetry, spoken word, stories, visual arts, cultural celebrations, outdoor festivities, films, dance, processions, forums, workshops, discussions, gallery exhibits, mixed media, hip hop, art talks, history walks and a diverse array of artist showcases.

The mandate of the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival is to profile and foster the development of community arts in the Downtown Eastside - from community building and bridge building, to celebrating artists and cultures, to giving voice to local concerns. The festival involves a wide range of professional, community, emerging and student artists and lovers of the arts. Over 1,000 artists and 500 volunteers participated in last year's festival.

To celebrate Vancouver's 125th anniversary and promote the spirit of our home community, the 2011 Festival theme is: "Telling Our Story, Building Our Community." The Downtown Eastside is the heart of the City, the founding neighbourhood where Vancouver began, and it is the home of choice for thousands of the City's residents. The Festival takes inspiration from the words of Downtown Eastside poet and historian, Sandy Cameron: "Each of us has something to tell, something to teach. We speak the language of the heart - here - in the Downtown Eastside - the soul of Vancouver."
