Second Nature Lab

This fall, Continuing Studies is pleased to present Second Nature Lab, a creative and experimental investigation of the relationship between humans and the natural world. Design-builds, public walks, workshops and events will investigate topics such as technology, sustainable design, agriculture, and food fermentation and production. Community Arts Council of Vancouver

creates community through the arts.

Our mission: CACV is the voice for the community arts in Vancouver. We explore critical social issues through creative processes. CACV fosters and supports programs, practices and initiatives that develop common understanding through shared experiences.

From its founding in 1946 as the first community arts council in North America to today, CACV has been influential in the arts and culture scene in Vancouver. 2010 program priorities are to support community arts programming and infrastructure in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver; provide leadership in community arts in the City as a whole; and be a leader in the developing field of environmental art.

Greetings!

September is here and things have kicked into high gear. It was a great pleasure to participate in the Kits House Eco-Arts event in late August and visit the Art Is Land Network exhibition at Granville Island.

Our three 65th Anniversary events are attracting attention and I hope to see some of you at one, two or all three!

Please take 5 to 10 minutes to complete our survey on community arts in Vancouver.  Click here to provide your input!

"Don't be afraid, as no life-loving bee wants to sting you. ...Act like you know what you're doing, even if you don't. Above all, send the bees love. Every little thing wants to be loved."

-The Secret Life of Bees

"Every little thing wants to be loved."

BeesIsn't that the truth? I remember

being really struck by that line. However small, even these little flying, stinging creatures need love and a place to belong; a home.

Bee numbers are declining because of habitat destruction, farming practices, pesticide use, the list goes on. But don't despair! We can all do our little bit - however small. Remember, even the small things can potentially make all the difference!

We will be building a lovely bee home on September 18th in Mary's common room which will hang in the garden circle of 6th and Trafalger. Come be part of this wonderful celebration of life, love, and little things!

September 18 from 4-6pm - Eco-Arts Creation time, 6-8pm - Potluck

Sunday September 18th 10-11.30am
Oliver Kellhammer talk
In his talk, Kellhammer will outline his concept of 'open source landscape,' a design philosophy he incorporated into his 2003 founding of the Means of Production project. Open source landscapes are generative and evolve as a function of the interplay between their human and non-human constituents, with a minimum of top-down aesthetic control. The result is a kind of ecological palimpsest that  constantly adapts to those who participate. Kellhammer will also present a short history of the project and highlight some of the interesting plants on the site and their ethnobotanical significance.
Oliver Kellhammer is a Canadian land artist, permaculture teacher, activist and writer. His botanical interventions and public art projects demonstrate nature's surprising ability to recover from damage. His work facilitates the processes of environmental regeneration by engaging the botanical and socio-political underpinnings of the landscape, taking such forms as small-scale urban eco-forestry, inner city community agriculture and the restoration of eroded railway ravines. His process is essentially anti-monumental - as his interventions integrate into the ecological and cultural communities that form around them, his role as artist becomes increasingly obscured.
He describes what he does as a kind of catalytic model-making, which lives on as a vehicle for community empowerment while demonstrating methods of positive engagement with the global environmental crisis.

Chloe Bennet - Bees Please

Bees Please started in Spring 2011, with the creation of the Bees Please Mason Bee box in the roundabout at Yew & 6th in Kitsilano. Designed by Chloe Bennett, the project was part experiment, part statement, part guerrilla gardening, part public sculpture. The mason bee house is a success, with mason bees currently inhabiting the sculptural cube.

Winter Solstice Eco-Arts Lantern

In 2010, we created our first Winter Solstice Community Eco-Arts Lantern at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Garden.

This year we're imagining more variety and a tree-shaped structure.  Probably using morning glory/bindweed as a key component for tying things together.
