Greetings!
Synchronicity and Six (or Less) Degrees of Separation.
We're very pleased to welcome Sonja Embree to the Community Arts Council's board. Sonja's background is in teaching and psychology and she brings great experience in a number of vital areas to the Council. She's dived right in to help with grant applications, community arts dialogue planning and, of course, learning the ropes as Board Secretary. She was drawn to us because within a couple of weeks, "Community Arts Council of Vancouver" kept popping up through friends and friends of friends. When she received an invitation to come and build nests and a potluck for Village Vancouver from me (drawing several areas of my life together), she decided to pursue this synchronicity (meaningful coincidence). (See below for more about that project). That took her to the website to find there was a vacancy on our board and then to Leslie Kemp as chair of the Nominating Committee. Along the way she found she knew several board members, or knew people who knew them.
I sometimes think in my life it's not so much six degrees of separation, but two degrees - six times! I seem to frequently meet people where I have more than one connection with through unrelated connections.
On my mind right now is the fact I walked into the book store on Hornby Island, saw the latest book of poems by Cornelia Hoogland who I'd "met" through internet because we're hoping to set up an Eco-Arts Salon with Cornelia this coming winter. While we'd exchanged emails and I'd watched some youtube videos of her readings, I was a bit surprised when I bought Wolf Woods Girl, her book to see a note saying she divides her time between London Ontario and Hornby Island.
Cornelia describes an eco-poet as a nature poet with anxiety. Through the wonders of the internet, we've now connected and plan to meet up in person while we're both on the island.
Sincerely, Mary Bennett, Administrator, CACV mary@cacv.ca 604-682-0010

She records the passage of time inherent in her ephemeral installations through photographs that she later exhibits. The socially engaged aspects of her art practice have been influenced by her work in theatre, dance and community based productions. Dextras is a graduate of the Emily Carr University, where she has been a sessional teacher for the past 8 years. Her artwork has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and featured in numerous publications.
