2011 Eco-Arts Salon Series
Thanks to Oliver Kellhammer for a fantastic Eco-Arts Salon on June 22! He showed us how "he remixes ecosystems, like a DJ remixes songs." For pictures click here . Come join us in discussion at our upcoming Eco-Arts Salons - held the fourth Wednesday of every month from 7-9pm at the Roundhouse! Each salon will feature an environmental artist who presents their work - stimulating discussion around questions such as 'What does it mean to be an environmental artist?' and 'What is the potential for community environmental arts in Vancouver?'

Performing artist and Executive Director of the Vancouver Society of Storytelling, Naomi Steinberg will be presenting and leading a dialogue related to her work. The past 9 years of Naomi'slife have been closely focused on community engagement and performance - in her own words "to be a storyteller, first you have to be a story-listener". Naomi has developed the ELEMENTAL initiative, which uses stories about the elements (air, earth, water, fire, metal) as the metaphoric access point for an intergenerational story-share and workshop series. More details below: see ELEMENTAL Vancouver Socity of Storytelling. Wednesday August 24 - Nicole Dextras Wednesday September 28 - Rita Wong Wednesday October 26 - Sharon Kallis Wednesday November 23 - Yarn Bombers Tuesday December 6 - Haruko Okano Thank you to the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre for partnering with us to present this series and to the City of Vancouver for funding support for our Community Environmental Arts Program.

Ocean Flotilla project with Haruko Okano
Description: Ocean Flotilla is the public participation component of a larger environmental project created by Haruko Okano that will be displayed on Granville Island September 8 - 18, 2011. Ocean Flotilla is 1000 paper boats that will carry the messages contributed from here and around the globe in response to the question "What is your hopes for a healthier world in the next 100years?" The small boats made of unbleached kraft paper waterproofed with Kakishibu will be part of the 1000 strong flotilla launched from the NW perimeter by Granville Island Boat Rental on Granville Island on the afternoon of September 17, the second-last day of the annual Fringe Festival. Kakishibu is an organic multipurpose Japanese medium used as a dye, insect resistant, water proofing liquid.
The workshop invites up to 50 participants to help construct and waterproof paper boats that will be numbered so that participants and interested parties can track the boats journey on the blog site for this project.

ELEMENTAL: Vancouver Society of Storytelling

The Vancouver Society of Storytelling (VSOS) has developed a storytelling series titled ELEMENTAL, focusing on the elements - air, earth, water, fire and metal.
ELEMENTAL:earth will see the building of a cob "Storytellers' Bench" in Robson Park, at the headwaters of the historic and now buried St. George Creek.
In August there will be a series of storytelling workshops hosted at the Native Education College (285 e. 5th ave), followed by Cob building workshops with the Mudgirls in September.
There are three storytelling workshops: 1. Adults - Tuesday August 9, 430 - 730 2. Youth - Thursday August 11, 3:00 - 6:00 3. Children Tuesday August 16th, 10:00 - 1:00
Each workshop will start with participants getting to know each other and then, opening the space for Coast Salish Elders to tell stories from this particular land. After a short break, participants will share their own voices and stories through a facilitated process to better understand what living in this time and place means to them. Once the workshops are complete, participants will be invited to attend a visioning session to develop a design for the "Storytellers' Bench". The bench will incorporate the ideas, themes and stories that have been shared during the three workshops.
The storytelling workshops are FREE of charge and snacks will be provided. Space is limited - pre-registration is recommended.
