Greetings!
Lots going on around town - I'll be at the Vancouver City Planning Commission's Symposium Friday and Saturday, along with a number of other CACV friends and volunteers. Saturday I'm heading to We Are the People (see below) and the Community Arts Fund is one of the beneficiaries of the benefit: The Songs of Mahalia Jackson on April 15 (see left).
Yesterday I took a friend for lunch in Stanley Park and then did a tour of several of the Stanley Park Environmental Art Projects.
Right is Cozy by Shirley Wiebe from June of last year. It's now further broken down with a majority of the tree cookies on the ground. Clearly the last to go are the ones on top. To my surprise it didn't seem as if there were any plants growing on top as yet. You can find a map online at http://vancouver.ca/spea along with lots more information including several excellent videos with introductions with the artists. This is the fifth time over two years, I've made this "pilgrimage".
Sincerely, Mary Bennett, Administrator, CACV mary@cacv.ca 604-682-0010

ADVANCE BOX OFFICE: www.firehallartscentre.ca or 689-0926 We Are the People commemorates 125 years of laughter and tears in the Downtown Eastside - the historical heart of our city. This concert of original and period songs of struggle, loss, celebration and perseverance showcases the home-grown creativity of the Downtown Eastside community.
Historical events highlighted in this City of Vancouver 125th Anniversary concert include the rescue of Vancouver residents by members of a Squamish congregation during the 1886 fire, the 1907 Anti-Asian riot, labour struggles of the 1930's, historic personalities such as saloon keeper Gassy Jack Deighton, industrial tycoon / philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, activist and City Councillor Bruce Eriksen; inner city challenges such as poverty, unemployment, homelessness, prostitution and addiction; neighbourhood victories such as the establishment of the Carnegie Community Centre and the Militant Moms' successful protest; and Downtown Eastside values of tolerance, courage, compassion and community. The project's principal artists are award winning Savannah Walling (Artistic Director and lead writer) and Neil Weisensel (Music Director, Conductor and co-composer). The songs are composed by some of Vancouver's finest composers: Michael Creber, Earle Peach, Joelysa Pankanea, Wyckham Porteous, Bill Sample, Yawen V. Wang and Neil Weisensel. Song lyrics have been written by Dalannah Gail Bowen, James Fagan Tait, Bob Sarti, Savannah Walling and emerging community writers from the Downtown Eastside. With special guests: St. James Music Academy Youth Choir! |

Playful Children are Strong Children
It was 125 years ago that the YMCA began helping Vancouver become stronger. It's time to celebrate this milestone and unveil a tremendous work of art by Nathan Scott, donated by Peter A. Allard and The Highbury Foundation. This sculpture embodies children taken with the playful wonder of our natural environment and celebrates the YMCA's values of honesty, respect, care and responsibility. This is the time for an evening of celebration-of art, of childhood and the spirit of the YMCA. We hope you will join us ! Event Details: Robert Lee YMCA 955 Burrard Street, Vancouver Wed Apr 13 4-6 pm RSVP 604.622.4951 claire.smith@vanymca.org

Eco-Art Salon Hits the Streets!
CACV's Eco Arts Salon is taking to the streets. Come and get involved in a hands-on project. Using an intersection in the Jericho Beach area of Kitsilano as a pilot, we are brainstorming ideas about how to put an environmental arts twist on Vancouver's Green Streets program.
Green Streets COMMUNITY ART GARDEN Corners of 8th & Trimble SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR ART MAKING & GARDENING! We are looking for people with a passion for arts, gardening and/or community building. All are welcome. No experience necessary. Join us this month to tend the corner gardens at the intersection of 8th & Trimble and begin decorating the space with small art pieces, short stories & interactive poetry to include in the greenery.
THROUGH ART MAKING & POETRY WE'LL BE INVESTIGATING THE THEME OF GROWTH & WHAT WE'D LIKE TO CULTIVATE IN OUR LIVES. Saturday, April 16 @ 3:30 - 5:30pm Saturday, April 30 @ 3:30 - 5:30pm Meet @ the Corner of Trimble & West 8th street ( 99 Bus - UBC. Get off at Sasamat ) **Come dressed for the weather and please bring garden tools if you have them. We start off outside and then depending on the activity we'll move indoors, to the park or a cafe. Call 604 762 8112 if you're running late. *** About... We meet every other Saturday. Each meetup will include gardening plus a range of different activities including creative brainstorming, outdoor poetry making, creating a five senses garden, collaborating with youth, walks down to Jericho beach for inspiration, community building, conversation and more. Multidisciplinary artist and educator, Ella Cooper has recently gained four of the City of Vancouver's Green Street plots and would like to turn them into a veritable eco-arts gallery and space for community engagement. Collaborating with the Community Arts Council's Eco Arts Salon, gardeners, guerilla knitters, creative minds, poets and interested members of the community we will be working to create a happy blend of community gardening and eco arts projects that creates an interactive green space that will evolve as the plants grow. If you can't make it to this meeting but would like to be actively involved in the gardening and eco-arts making, please contact Ella at ella@eapnetwork.ca - 604-762-8112.
