Greetings!
Did you know that the Community Arts Council of Vancouver was formed in 1946 as the first community arts council in North America? That the original survey and report The Arts in Our Town published in 1946 is in the Vancouver Public Library, as is the book of the same title published in 1996 on our 50th anniversary, written by Elizabeth O'Kiely?
Since it's our 65th anniversary, we're planning some celebrations for the fall and wanting to connect with people who may have been involved in CACV in earlier days but not recently. Among other things we're planning an afternoon tea in late September and will be starting to interview past presidents about their time leading the CACV.
We're posting - and inviting comments - some historical tidbits and questions at http://communityarts.ning.com/forum/categories/history-of-community-arts-in/listForCategory. You can browse, but have to join (it's free) to post.
If you were part of our history - or know someone who was - we'd like to hear from you.
Sincerely, Mary Bennett, Administrator, CACV mary@cacv.ca 604-682-0010 |
Eco-Art Salon Hits the Streets!
On the afternoon of March 5, CACV's Eco Arts Salon meeting will take to the streets to get involved in a hands-on project. Using an intersection in the Jericho Beach area of Kitsilano as a test case, we'll be brainstorming ideas about how to put an environmental arts twist on Vancouver's Green Streets program. Follow-up meetings will provide us with an opportunity to put the ideas into action. See below for further details.

Green Streets Eco Arts Project
Meet up & Brainstorm Session
Meet @ the Corner of Trimble & West 8th street ( 99 Bus - UBC. Get off at Sasamat )
(Meeting will then continue in a cozy house down the block)
Join us for a fun brainstorm session to help develop an original outdoor eco arts project as part of Vancouver's Green Streets program.
Multidisciplinary artist and CACV volunteer Ella Cooper has recently gained four outdoor Green Street plots and would like to turn them into a veritable eco-arts gallery and space for community engagement. She has invited the Eco Arts Salon to be a part of the project and we need your help to come up with a plan for this exciting endeavour.
Please bring a natural or creative 'artefact' that tells the group something about you as part of a small icebreaker we will play at the beginning of the meeting.
2pm Meet at the Corner of Trimble & West 8th street
2:30pm Walk down to meeting place (call if you're running late 778-855-0519)
2:45pm Group sharing - some creative games led by Ella Cooper & Saskia Wolsak.
3:30 Eco Art Green Streets Brainstorm
4:00 Action plan & closing
4:30 End
This will be the first stage of the eco arts project. If you can't make it to this meeting but would like to be actively involved in the gardening and eco-arts making. Please contact Ella at ella@cacv.ca
For more information on the Community Arts Council's Eco Arts Salon go to: www.cacv.ca or join the Environmental Art Group at communityarts.ning.com, our online community centre.

Volunteer with us
If you can help volunteer on hosting, organizing, or promoting community arts events, please contact info@cacv.ca
Next Committee Meetings Meetings are a great way to meet other volunteers. Meetings are usually at the CACV office in the Woodwards Heritage Building. Each meeting is usually between 5 and 10 people. Some people are regulars, and others drop in when they can and do most of their volunteer work at events or online.

Community Arts Council of Vancouver
creates community through the arts.
Our mission: CACV is the voice for the community arts in Vancouver. We explore critical social issues through creative processes. CACV fosters and supports programs, practices and initiatives that develop common understanding through shared experiences.
From its founding in 1946 as the first community arts council in North America to today, CACV has been influential in the arts and culture scene in Vancouver. 2010 program priorities are to support community arts programming and infrastructure in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver; provide leadership in community arts in the City as a whole; and be a leader in the developing field of environmental art.
