Happy Tails to You! RISPCA's eNewsletter

July 2011

Greetings!

The 4th of July was not a day for celebration at the RISPCA this year. Indi, a poodle/terrier mix, was abandoned at our door between the hours of 11:00am and 5:30pm. He was emaciated and had severe wounds on his legs. Had it not been for Elaine Puhacz, who passed by the RISPCA to see what our hours were, Indi may not have survived the night. The East Providence Police were summoned to the shelter and whisked Indi to Bay State Veterinary Hospital for critical emergency care. Indi has a long road ahead of him but we are hopeful he will recover. In the end, we hope that justice will be served.

We invite you to continue following Indi's story on our website (www.rispca.com/indi.htm). Please be advised: some of the pictures may be disturbing.

On a much happier note, our annual dog walk is just seven weeks away. The 9th Annual Marvin Memorial Walk for the Animals will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Goddard State Park.  We are asking for your support. Register today (for free) and start collecting pledges for the RISPCA and be sure to join us for a great day in the park with your friends, family, and dogs.  We hope to see you there!

Yours very truly,

Girl Scouts Donate to RISPCA

Girl Scouts of RI raise money for RISPCA's Marvin Fund

Each year, the Girl Scouts of Rhode Island  select a local non-profit organization to be the recipient of their annual cookie sale service project. This year, the Rhode Island SPCA's Marvin Fund was chosen as the recipient of this project. Each scout was given the option of donating a portion of the money Girl Scoutsthey raised selling Girl Scout Cookies to the Marvin Fund.

Thanks to their efforts and compassion, a total of $6,181.69 was donated.  This is the largest service project donation the  Girl Scouts have made since the program started!

Featured Adoptable Pet
Stella needs experienced owner

StellaThe Rhode Island SPCA is home to more than just cats and dogs.  We also routinely have many small and exotic animals

Stella is a one-year-old Iguana.  She is fairly calm and tolerant of being handled but will need consistent, gentle handling to remain this way.  Iguanas can grow up to 6 feet and require large enclosures, high temperatures, expensive lighting setups, and specialized diets.  Iguanas do not make great pets for young children because they are fragile, can cause injury when frightened, and potentially carry salmonella. For an experienced, adult owner however, Stella would be a great addition.

June's "Happy Tail"Shoop
Shoop joins list of RISPCA alumni

Shoop was abandoned at the door of the RISPCA in July of 2010. A few weeks later, she had 4 kittens.  They were all quickly adopted, but Shoop remained at the RISPCA for months.  Finally, after nearly 8 months, Shoop was adopted in February of 2011.  Unfortunately, she was returned to the shelter after just a few weeks.

Shoop was adopted into her forever home on June 2, 2011.  Though it took awhile, Shoop's story has a happy ending!

About the Rhode Island SPCA

The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RISPCA) is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that is governed by a Board of Directors.  The RISPCA is not affiliated with any national, state, or government agencies and relies on private donations, special events, and grants for operating expenses.  The Society was the first humane organization in Rhode Island and is the 3rd oldest humane organization in the United States.  At 140 years old, we are the only animal rescue organization in the state of Rhode Island that is empowered to investigate and prosecute cases of animal cruelty and neglect.
