Greetings!
May got off to a great start at the Rhode Island SPCA with a beautiful day at Goddard State Park for our 9th Annual Horse Ride Fundraiser. I am happy to report that this year's ride was our most successful yet! With over 130 horses and riders in attendance, we raised $11,050.90 for the animals in our care. While it is not all about the money, we simply would not be able to continue our mission without it. I would like to extend a special thanks to Denise Anthony, Sandra MacDonald, Russ and Ellen Flock of KFC in North Kingstown, Cranston, and Warwick, our sponsors (Animal Print Magazine and Rhode Island Mag!) and all of the volunteers and participants who contributed to this great day. If you have not been to the RISPCA recently, we invite you to stop by for a visit. While you're here you will notice a few changes to our facility, not to mention some deserving pets waiting for a second chance. We have recently completed the installation of new kennel doors and a new socialization room. The doors have reduced noise levels in our kennels and the socialization room has given staff and volunteers a place to spend some time with the dogs outside of their kennels. These additions have helped to reduce stress levels in our dogs and make their temporary stay at the RISPCA as pleasant as possible. In this issue you will also read about the RISPCA's continued efforts to fight animal cruelty throughout the state and the challenges of investigating animal abuse cases, featured adoptable pets, "happy tails" of RISPCA alumni, and upcoming fundraising events. I hope you and your pets enjoy the warmer spring weather and I thank you for your continued support of the Rhode Island SPCA. Yours very truly, E.J. Finocchio, DVM President, Rhode Island SPCA |
Cruelty Investigations Challenges of investigating animal abuse casesThe Rhode Island SPCA is the only non-profit animal rescue organization in Rhode Island that is legally able to investigate and prosecute cases of animal cruelty and neglect. While we work with local law enforcement and animal control officers, being responsible for investigating cases throughout the state is not an easy task. The Animal Cruelty Investigator at the Rhode Island SPCA receives thousands of complaints on animal cruelty each year and goes on countless investigations. Representatives from the Rhode Island SPCA recently spoke with NBC 10's Mario Hilario on '10 News Conference' about our efforts to fight animal cruelty throuhghout the state and the challenges we face. This discussion is available for viewing here: '10 News Conference' talks to RISPCA president, investigator. |
Featured Adoptable Pet Noah needs an appropriate home The Rhode Island SPCA cares for more than just dogs and cats. On any given day rabbits, ferrets, mice, rats, gerbils, degus, chinchillas, hamsters, turtles, snakes, lizards, lovebirds, or cockatoos may call the RISPCA their temporary home. On April 24th, Noah, a 9 year old sulcata tortoise was brought to the Rhode Island SPCA after he became too large for his family to deal with. Noah currently weighs upwards of 60 pounds and can easily reach 100-150 pounds when he is full grown. Sulcata tortoises can live as long or longer than humans and require a knowledgeable and commited owner. |

April's "Happy Tail" Mema joins the list of RISPCA alumni
On April 20th, Mema, who had been with us for over 5 months, finally found her forever home when she was adopted by two dedicated RISPCA volunteers.
Mema had been relinquished to the RISPCA twice and became a staff and volunteer favorite during her lengthy stay. We were all very happy to see her go to her forever home!

The RISPCA is not affiliated with any national, state, or government agencies and relies on private donations, special events, and grants for operating expenses.
